- Pellroja (en plural pellroges) és una descripció racial per als pobles d'Amèrica i una de les metàfores del color de la raça utilitzades a Europa i Amèrica del Nord des de la colonització Europea de l'hemisferi occidental. Aquest terme o etnònim és considerat per alguns com a ofensiu. D'acord amb l'Oxford English Dictionary (OED), el terme redskin, com els termes «indi vermell» o «home vermell», ve del color vermellós d'alguns natius americans. L'OED parla de l'ús del vermell referint-se al color de la pell des del 1587. Moltes teories defensen una nova versió de l'origen de la paraula, però encara no hi ha una conclusió definitiva. - "Piel roja" (red skin en inglés) es un término usado para referirse a los pueblos indígenas de América y una terminología de color para raza, utilizado en América del Norte y Europa desde la invasión europea de América. El término es controvertido y considerado por algunos como ofensivo. El término fue utilizado en Europa y América a lo largo de los siglos XVIII y XIX como un término común de referencia para los indígenas de Norteamérica. El término fue de uso común, como puede verse en las películas del Oeste, pero es ahora ampliamente considerado como peyorativo y rara vez se utiliza en público. Como con cualquier término que se considera discriminatorio, diferentes personas pueden tener diferentes opiniones acerca de la idoneidad del término. En julio de 2020 el equipo de Fútbol americano: Washington Football Team (Anteriormente conocido como "Washington Redskins") cambió su nombre debido a las quejas de nativos americanos y demás personas que exigieron el cambio de nombre al equipo durante décadas por ser ofensivo y racista. - Redskin is a slang term for Native Americans in the United States and First Nations in Canada. The term redskin underwent pejoration through the 19th to early 20th centuries and in contemporary dictionaries of American English it is labeled as offensive, disparaging, or insulting. Although the term has almost disappeared from contemporary use, it remains as the name of many sports teams. The most prominent was the Washington NFL team. After decades of resistance to change by the owners, management and fans; major sponsors responded to calls to end systemic racism in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by advocating a name change. The new name Washington Commanders was announced on February 2, 2022. While the usage by other teams has been declining steadily, 38 high schools in the United States continue to be Redskins. School administrators and alumni assert that their use of the name is honoring their local tradition and not insulting to Native Americans. The origin of the choice of red to describe Native Americans in English is debated. While related terms were used in anthropological literature as early as the 17th century, labels based on skin color entered everyday speech around the middle of the 18th century. "At the start of the eighteenth century, Indians and Europeans rarely mentioned the color of each other's skins. By midcentury, remarks about skin color and the categorization of peoples by simple color-coded labels (red, white, black) had become commonplace." (en)
