- Le Profile in Courage Award est une récompense privée américaine visant à récompenser des personnes dont le courage s'apparente à celui décrit dans le livre de l'ancien président John F. Kennedy intitulé Profiles in Courage (Prix Pulitzer 1957). Il s'agit plus précisément de personnes, qui en accord avec leur conscience, ont risqué leur carrière ou leur vie en prenant des décisions d'intérêt national ou local alors que l'opinion publique était en opposition avec ces décisions et que des pressions externes se faisaient sentir. Les gagnants sont sélectionnés par un comité bipartite nommé par la fondation de la John F. Kennedy Library. La famille Kennedy et d'autres personnalités importantes américaines appartiennent à cette fondation. Le prix est offert chaque année aux environs de la date d'anniversaire du président Kennedy (29 mai). Une cérémonie se tient alors à la Bibliothèque Kennedy de Boston. La récompense est généralement offerte par Caroline Kennedy. Le prix est une lanterne en alliage d'argent réalisé par le bijoutier Tiffany's. Le dessin fut imaginé par Edwin Schlossberg. La lanterne se fonde sur la lanterne du navire USS Constitution, le dernier navire de l'United States Navy à fonctionner uniquement grâce à la force du vent. En mai 2002, le prix fut offert non pas à une personne mais à tous les représentants de la police et du service incendie de New York en hommage à leur courage lors des attentats du 11 septembre 2001. - The Profile in Courage Award is a private award given to recognize displays of courage similar to those John F. Kennedy originally described in his book of the same name. It is given to individuals (often elected officials) who, by acting in accord with their conscience, risked their careers or lives by pursuing a larger vision of the national, state or local interest in opposition to popular opinion or pressure from constituents or other local interests. The winners of the award are selected by a committee named by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, which includes members of the Kennedy family and other prominent Americans. It is generally awarded each year around the time of JFK's birthday (May 29) at a ceremony at the Kennedy Library in Boston. The award is generally presented by JFK's daughter, Caroline. Also before their deaths, other presenters had included John Kennedy's brother, Ted, his son John Jr., and his wife Jacqueline. Two recipients, John Lewis (in 2001) and William Winter (in 2008), were designated as honorees for Lifetime Achievement. The winner is presented with a sterling silver lantern made by Tiffany's which was designed by Edwin Schlossberg. The lantern is patterned after the lanterns on the USS Constitution which was launched in 1797. It is the last sail-powered ship to remain part of the US Navy, and is permanently moored nearby. (en)
