- Das New York Life Insurance Building wurde zwischen 1926 und 1928 von dem Architekten Cass Gilbert in New York City erbaut. Das Gebäude war früher der Hauptsitz der New York Life Insurance Company und ist das zweite und letzte Gebäude, das von Gilbert im neogotischen Stil erbaut wurde. Das Gebäude ist 188 Meter hoch und besitzt 40 Stockwerke. Neben 2180 Fenstern lassen sich auch 72 Gargoyles an dem Gebäude finden. Die charakteristische goldfarbene Spitze des Gebäudes hat eine Höhe von sechs Stockwerken und war ursprünglich ein mit Blattgold besetztes Kupferdach. Dieses wurde aufgrund von Schäden durch Umwelteinflüsse 1967 durch ein Dach mit goldfarbenen Keramikfliesen ersetzt. Das Gebäude ist heute noch ein prägendes Bild in der Skyline von New York City. Das New York Life Insurance Building erhielt am 2. Juni 1978 den Status eines National Historic Landmarks zuerkannt und wurde in das National Register of Historic Places eingetragen. (de)

The building, designed by Cass Gilbert, abuts Madison Square Park in the Rose Hill and NoMad neighborhoods of Manhattan. It occupies an entire city block bounded by Madison Avenue, Park Avenue South, and 26th and 27th Streets. The New York Life Building was designed with Gothic Revival details similar to Gilbert's previous commissions, including 90 West Street and the Woolworth Building. The tower is 40 stories tall, consisting of 34 office stories topped by a pyramidal, gilded six-story roof. At the time of the building's construction, many structures were being built in the Art Deco style, and so Gilbert's design incorporated Art Deco influences in its massing while retaining the older-style Gothic Revival detailing. The New York Life Building is distinguished from the skyline by its gilded roof. The New York Life Building was constructed in 1927–1928 on the site of Madison Square Garden. Upon completion, the New York Life Building was described as being run "like a small city". After World War II, New York Life became especially profitable, and built an annex to the north between 1960 and 1962. Additionally, New York Life completed a series of renovations to the original building during the late 20th century. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1978 and was designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2000.
