Fue lanzada por Hudson para PC Engine en Japón en 17 de noviembre de 1989. Luego fue lanzado por NEC para el TurboGrafx-16 en América del Norte en 1990. Konami se hace cargo de la distribución del juego tras el cierre de Hudson Soft. - Neutopia is an overhead action-adventure video game developed by Hudson Soft. It was released by Hudson for the PC Engine in Japan on November 17, 1989. It was then released by NEC for the TurboGrafx-16 in North America in 1990. It was re-released for the Virtual Console service worldwide for the Wii in 2007; it was re-released for the PlayStation Network in Japan in 2010 and in North America in 2011. It was re-released for the Wii U on April 16, 2014 in Japan, and in USA and Europe in 2017. The game takes place in the land of Neutopia, where the evil demon Dirth has captured Princess Aurora and has stolen the eight ancient medallions which contain the wisdom and power necessary to maintain peace and prosperity throughout the land. It is up to the protagonist Jazeta to retrieve the eight medallions, defeat Dirth, rescue Princess Aurora, and save the land and its people. Neutopia is widely regarded as a clone of the popular Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda in nearly every aspect. Many reviewers have praised the game for making noticeable improvements over Zelda, but various shortcomings – which include long passwords unless the system is used in conjunction with an add-on providing battery-backed RAM, repetitive gameplay, and poor collision detection – prevent the game from being superior to the 1986 Nintendo title. But overall, reviewers have called Neutopia one of the better video games of its type and one of the better titles in the TurboGrafx-16 library. There would eventually be a sequel to the game, Neutopia II, in which Jazeta disappears and his son sets out to find him. (en)

Nel 2007 fu portato nella Virtual Console Wii ed il 16 aprile 2014 nella Wii U nipponica, mentre una versione per PlayStation Network venne messa in commercio nel 2010 in Giappone e nel 2011 in Nord America. Il gioco si svolge nel regno di Neutopia, dove il malvagio demone Dirth ha catturato la principessa Aurora e ha rubato gli otto antichi medaglioni che contengono la saggezza ed il potere necessari per mantenere la pace e la prosperità in tutta la terra. Spetta al protagonista Jazeta recuperarli, per sconfiggere Dirth, salvare Aurora e tutta Neutopia. Neutopia è ampiamente considerato un clone del ben più celebre videogioco di Nintendo The Legend of Zelda, del quale ricalca quasi ogni aspetto, dalle meccaniche di gioco all'ambientazione. Molti critici lo hanno comunque lodato per aver apportato notevoli miglioramenti rispetto all'opera di Shigeru Miyamoto, sebbene non possa essergli superiore per via di varie carenze, come lunghe password, un gameplay ripetitivo ed una scarsa rilevazione delle collisioni. Nel complesso però, lo hanno definito uno dei migliori prodotti del suo genere e uno dei migliori nel catalogo del TurboGrafx-16.
