- Al llarg de la història registrada, la regió de l'Orient Mitjà o parts d'aquesta ha rebut nombrosos noms, que s'han aplicat a una part o a tot el Llevant. De vegades, dos o més d'aquests noms han estat utilitzats simultàniament per diferents cultures o sectes. Com a resultat natural, alguns dels noms del Llevant tenen una gran càrrega política. Potser el menys polititzat sigui el del propi «Llevant», equivalent el terme àrab al-Màixriq (en àrab المشرق, al-Maxriq, literalment «la terra on surt el sol»), donat a la regió per la seva ubicació a l'est de la mar Mediterrània. - استعملت كلمة شام للإشارة لمدينة دمشق فهي أحد اسمائها الكثيرة والاسم المرادف لها على مر العصور كما استخدم اسم شام شريف الذي أطلقه عليها العثمانيون تقديسًا لها واسم قصبة الشام الذي استعمله عدد من المؤرخين والجغرافيين المسلمين وجلق الشام الذي أطلقه الغساسنة وشامة الدنيا والشام العدية والشآم والفيحاء والكثير من الأسماء التي اطلقت عليها خلال التاريخ المدون وهي المركز والعاصمة لأقليم بلاد الشام الذي يمثل أماكن مختلفة من منطقة غربي أسيا التي تشمل في يومنا هذا بلاد سوريا وما حولها سوريا، فلسطين، لبنان والأردن وهذا الاسم طبق على المنطقة التي تشمل هذه المناطق والتي تعرف باسم بلاد الشام. On occasion, two or more of these names have been used at the same time by different cultures or sects. As a natural result, some of the names of the Levant are highly politically charged. Perhaps the least politicized name is Levant itself, which simply means "where the sun rises" or "where the land rises out of the sea", a meaning attributed to the region's easterly location on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea.
