- This list is a chronological progression of record times for the marathon. World records in the marathon are now ratified by World Athletics, the international governing body for the sport of athletics. Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a world record for men of 2:01:09 on September 25, 2022, at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. This run improved on his own previous world record by 30 seconds. In 2018, he broke the then world record by 1 minute and 18 seconds, the greatest improvement over a previous record since 1967. The IAAF recognizes two world records for women, a time of 2:14:04 set by Brigid Kosgei on October 13, 2019, during the Chicago Marathon, which was contested by men and women together, and a "Women Only" record of 2:17:01, set by Mary Keitany, on April 23, 2017, at the London Marathon for women only. L'IAAF attribue également un record du monde féminin à la Kényane Mary Keitany en 2 h 17 min 1 s, performance établie le 23 avril 2017 à Londres dans une course exclusivement féminine. - I record mondiali nella maratona sono riconosciuti ufficialmente dalla World Athletics solo dal 1º gennaio 2004; in precedenza si parlava invece di "miglior prestazione mondiale". Affinché un record possa essere omologato il tracciato deve rispettare gli standard stabiliti dalla stessa World Athletics, lunghezza 42,195 km, dislivello non superiore allo 0,1%. La misurazione e l'omologazione del percorso avviene ad opera di misuratori ufficiali. Questi effettuano la misura rispettando The Measurement of Road Race Courses edito nel 2004 dalla federazione internazionale, utilizzando il calibrated bicycle method. In caso di record mondiale (e/o continentale, e/o nazionale) la misura viene ripetuta a conferma della distanza corsa che non deve essere inferiore a quella ufficiale. Esiste anche un'altra associazione, la (ARRS), che compila statistiche relative a corse su strada, e che mantiene una diversa progressione dei record. (it)
