Les recherches d'historiens depuis les années 1980 prouvent que ces affirmations, ancrées depuis les années 1950, sont en fait inexactes. Il y a un amalgame fait avec le Football Club havrais, sans lien direct avec le club actuel, qui a existé de 1872 à 1882 et qui jouait à la combinaison, sport proche du rugby. À la fondation du Havre AC en 1884, les membres du club votent pour la pratique de la combinaison, en préférence au rugby et au football. Les premiers statuts du club indiquant l'existence d'une section de football ne datent que de 1894, date à laquelle des clubs de football existent déjà, notamment à Paris. Le club a à l'origine lui-même entretenu cette date de 1872 et continue de le faire, bien qu'il soit prouvé qu'elle soit inexacte. Malgré cela, Le Havre AC reste un club historique du football français et l'un des plus vieux encore existants. Il participe au championnat de France de l'USFSA dès 1899, qu'il remporte trois fois, en 1899, 1900 et 1919. Le Havre AC passe professionnel dès 1933, le club étant l'un des clubs français ayant passé le plus de saisons en première et deuxième divisions confondues. En dépit de cinq titres de champion de France de Division 2, le Havre AC n'a jamais performé en Division 1, ne finissant qu'un fois dans les cinq premiers, en 1951. Le club est par ailleurs celui ayant disputé le plus de saisons en deuxième division. Le Havre AC, après avoir été finaliste de la Coupe de France dès 1920, la remporte en 1959 alors que le club n'évoluait qu'en Division 2, exploit resté unique jusqu'en 2009. Depuis 2012, le Havre AC dispute ses matchs au stade Océane. Le propriétaire du club est Vincent Volpe depuis le 4 juillet 2015, et l'équipe première dispute le championnat de France de Ligue 2 depuis la saison 2009-2010.
