- Horned helmets were worn by many people around the world. Headpieces mounted with animal horns or replicas were also worn from ancient times, as in the Mesolithic Star Carr. These were probably used for religious ceremonial or ritual purposes, as horns tend to be impractical on a combat helmet. Much of the evidence for these helmets and headpieces comes from depictions rather than the items themselves. (en)
- Le casque à cornes est un type de casque portant des ornements en corne animale ou imitant leur forme. Les découvertes du site de Star Carr, datant du Mésolithique, laissent supposer que ces ornements furent utilisés tôt pour des cérémonies religieuses ou des rituels, mais ils sont principalement connus comme représentatifs des guerriers Vikings, bien qu'il fût rare d'en voir sur le champ de bataille, ils s'en servaient lors de duels importants ou lors de cérémonies. Questa particolare tipologia di elmo, quasi certamente destinata soprattutto a un uso cerimoniale/rituale, venne sviluppata nel corso dell'età del bronzo in Eurasia restando in uso solo presso alcune popolazioni durante l'età del ferro. Nell'Europa baltica, il modello beneficiava di una certa notorietà ancora durante il Basso Medioevo. Un diffuso stereotipo, oggi noto come pienamente privo di fondatezza, vede l'elmo cornuto come tipico elmo vichingo. (it)
