- La güira és un instrument de percussió de la família dels idiòfons propis de la República Dominicana. En el seu origen remot des dels temps indígenes a la República Dominicana utilitzaven carbassa per crear la güira. Després es va anar desenvolupant el material de què estava fet aquest instrument; ara s'utilitza metall tou com a cos del cilindre amb petits orificis, expulsats de dins cap a fora. - Die Güira [ˈgwiɾa], auch Guira ist ein Schrapinstrument der lateinamerikanischen Musik. Sie spielt vor allen Dingen in der Merengue eine zentrale Rolle. (Die traditionelle Merengue in der Besetzung mit Akkordeon, Saxophon, Güira und Tambora wird in der Dominikanischen Republik auch „Güiri güiri“ genannt.) Die Güira ähnelt vom Aufbau und der Spielweise dem bekannteren, aus Kürbis gefertigten Güiro, der in der kubanischen und puertorikanischen Musik eingesetzt wird, zum Beispiel im Danzón sowie in den kolumbianischen Musikrichtungen Cumbia und Vallenato. Sie besteht aus einem Metallzylinder, der eine raue Oberfläche mit vielen kleinen Ausbuchtungen besitzt. Über diese Oberfläche wird mit einem Eisenbesen (Scraper) gerieben. Dadurch wird ein Klang erzeugt, den man als das karibische Pendant zur Hi-Hat auffassen kann. Die Güira weist durch die schabende Spieltechnik interessante Variationsmöglichkeiten auf. Der kurze Anschlag klingt im Prinzip ähnlich wie eine „closed Hi-hat“, der langgezogene Anschlag wie eine „open Hi-hat“. (de)

It is made of a metal sheet (commonly steel) and played with a stiff brush, thus being similar to the Haitian graj (a perforated metal cylinder scraped with a stick) and the Cuban guayo (metal scraper) and Puerto Rican güiro (gourd scraper). Güira, guayo and güiro all have a function akin to that of the indigenous native maracas or the trap-kit's hi-hat, namely providing a complementary beat. Performers on the güira are referred to as güireros and in merengue típico ensembles they often co-lead percussion sections along with tambora-playing tamboreros, due to the significance of their African-derived interlocking rhythms in providing a basic musical foundation for dance.
