Frederick Irwin Dretske (born 1932) is a philosopher noted for his contributions to epistemology and the philosophy of mind. Recent work centers on conscious experience and self-knowledge. He was awarded the Jean Nicod Prize in 1994. Dretske received his Ph.D from The University of Minnesota and taught for a number of years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before moving to Stanford University. After retiring from Stanford, he moved to Duke University where he is now research professor of Philosophy.

  • Fred Dretske (* 1932) ist ein US-amerikanischer Philosoph, der an der Stanford University in Kalifornien und der Duke University in North Carolina lehrt. Seine Hauptarbeitsgebiete sind die Erkenntnistheorie und die Philosophie des Geistes. 1994 wurde er mit dem Jean-Nicod-Preis ausgezeichnet. Dretske ist insbesondere für seine Analyse des Informationsbegriffs bekannt geworden. Diese Analyse soll unter anderem eine reduktive Erklärung des intentionalen Gehaltes von mentalen Zuständen ermöglichen. Der Versuch, Intentionalität reduktiv zu erfassen, ist dabei Teil von Dretskes allgemeinen Programm der „Naturalisierung des Geistes“. Das Ziel dieses Programms ist es, den Geist als ein unproblematisches biologisches Phänomen zu beschreiben. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, muss nicht nur die Intentionalität erklärt werden. Es ist auch eine Erklärung für Erlebnisgehalte und Selbstbewusstsein nötig. Dretske meint solche Erklärungen mittels des Konzepts der Repräsentation liefern zu können. (de)
