Dean Edwards Smith (born February 28, 1931) is a retired head coach of men’s college basketball. Originally from Emporia, Kansas, Smith has been called a “coaching legend” by the Basketball Hall of Fame. Smith is best known for his successful coaching tenure at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 36 years. Smith coached from 1961 to 1997 and retired as the NCAA Division I men's basketball coach with the most wins ever with 879 wins.

Smith is also known for running a clean program and having a high graduation rate for his players with 96.6% players going on to graduate. While at North Carolina, Smith helped promote desegregation by recruiting the University’s first African American scholarship basketball player Charlie Scott and pushing for equal treatment for African Americans by local businesses. Smith coached and worked with numerous individuals at North Carolina that went on to achieve notable success in basketball, as either players or coaches or both. Smith retired as head coach from North Carolina in 1997 saying that he was not able to give the team the same level of enthusiasm that he had had given it for years. Nach Besuch der Highschool (von 1945 bis 1949) in Topeka, Kansas, bekam er ein Stipendium der Universität von Kansas. Dort lernte er unter Coach Phog Allen die Grundlagen des Basketballspiels. Mit dem Team der Jayhawks gewann er 1952 die nationale College-Meisterschaft, im Jahr darauf unterlag man erst im Finale. Nach seiner Zeit als Spieler war er bis 1961 Assistenz-Trainer.
Im Alter von 30 Jahren wurde er Cheftrainer der Tar Heels an der Universität von North Carolina. Rasch formte er die Mannschaft zu einem Spitzenteam, doch erst 1971 reichte es zum NIT-Titel. 1976 gewann Smith als Trainer der Olympia-Auswahl der USA bei den Spielen in Montréal Gold. 1982 gewann er zum ersten Mal die NCAA-Meisterschaft, ein weiteres Mal gelang das 1993. Dreimal (1977, 1979 und 1993) wählte man ihn zum Trainer des Jahres. 1997 trat er mit einer Bilanz von 879 Siegen bei nur 254 Niederlagen zurück.
Zahlreiche erfolgreiche Spieler wurden von Dean Smith trainiert, darunter Bob McAdoo, James Worthy und Michael Jordan. Einige seiner Spieler wurden später ebenfalls erfolgreiche Trainer, wie Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown oder Roy Williams. Am 2.
