- Die NCAA Division I (D-I) ist die höchste Stufe der Sportprogramme von vielen US-amerikanischen Universitäten, die von der National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in den USA anerkannt ist. Zu den D-I-Schulen gehören die wichtigsten Hochschulsportarten mit größeren Budgets, umfangreicheren Einrichtungen und mehr Sportstipendien als die Divisions II und III, sowie viele kleinere Schulen, die sich für die höchste Ebene an interkollegialem Wettbewerb entschieden haben. Diese Ebene wurde einst als Universitäts-Division der NCAA bezeichnet, im Gegensatz zur unteren College-Division. Diese Begriffe wurden 1973 durch numerische Divisions ersetzt. Die Universitäts-Division wurde in Division I umbenannt, während die College-Division in zwei Teile geteilt wurde. Die Mitglieder der College-Division, die Stipendien anboten oder gegen diejenigen antreten wollten, die zur Division II wurden, während diejenigen, die keine Stipendien anbieten wollten, zur Division III wurden. This level was previously called the University Division of the NCAA, in contrast to the lower-level College Division; these terms were replaced with numeric divisions in 1973. The University Division was renamed Division I, while the College Division was split in two; the College Division members that offered scholarships or wanted to compete against those who did became Division II, while those who did not want to offer scholarships became Division III. For college football only, D-I schools are further divided into the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and those institutions that do not have any football program. FBS teams have higher game attendance requirements and more players receiving athletic scholarships than FCS teams. The FBS is named for its series of postseason bowl games, with various polls ranking teams after the conclusion of these games, while the FCS national champion is determined by a multi-team bracket tournament. For the 2020–21 school year, Division I contained 357 of the NCAA's 1,066 member institutions, with 130 in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), 127 in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), and 100 non-football schools, with six additional schools in the transition from Division II to Division I. There was a moratorium on any additional movement up to D-I until 2012, after which any school that wants to move to D-I must be accepted for membership by a conference and show the NCAA it has the financial ability to support a D-I program. Kryterium przydziału do dywizji jest budżet przeznaczany przez uczelnię na sport, w szczególności liczba oferowanych przez nią stypendiów sportowych, oraz poziom posiadanej infrastruktury. Choć uczelnie mogą wybrać, w których sportach będą wystawiać swoje reprezentacje, w Division I łączna liczba wystawionych przez nie zespołów nie może być mniejsza niż 14, w tym co najmniej siedem zespołów kobiecych i co najmniej 6 zespołów męskich. W praktyce wymogi te sprawiają, iż na udział w Division I mogą pozwolić sobie raczej duże i zamożne uczelnie, w większości o statusie uniwersytetu. Z drugiej strony, gwarantuje to wysoki poziom rozgrywek, dzięki czemu zawody międzyuczelniane cieszą się w USA bardzo dużą popularnością. Uczelnie mogą awansować do dywizji, przechodząc pomyślnie tzw. proces reklasyfikacji, w ramach którego muszą dowieść, że spełniają wszystkie kryteria. Obecnie przyjmowanie nowych wniosków zostało zawieszone do roku 2012. W skład Dywizji I wchodzą aktualnie 342 uczelnie, zaś 7 kolejnych jest w trakcie reklasyfikacji. Dywizja dzieli się na konferencje, skupiające nie więcej niż kilkanaście szkół. Większość rozgrywek toczy się na poziomie konferencji, a dopiero ich zwycięzcy rywalizują na szczeblu dywizji. Znaczna część rozgrywek Division I jest transmitowana w telewizji. Głównymi partnerami telewizyjnymi są sieci ESPN i CBS.
