Cresce, senza conoscere il padre, insieme alla madre. Dopo il liceo, si arruola nell’esercito e una volta finito l’addestramento militare si trasferisce a San Francisco. Nel corso degli anni 80, nonostante il lavoro come venditore nell’ambito medico, si ritrova ad affrontare gravi problemi economici. Accettato ad un training program di brokeraggio, lascia il lavoro di venditore, ma l’uomo che gli aveva proposto il programma viene licenziato e Gardner si ritrova senza lavoro e presto senza casa. La situazione si fa critica quando la moglie lo lascia e inizia una dura lotta per tenere con sé il figlio Chris Jr. Viene anche arrestato per delle multe non pagate. Ottenuto un posto da stagista alla Dean Witter Reynolds, continua a stentare a causa del magro stipendio. Nel 1981 passa l’esame di broker e come tale inizia ad ottenere guadagni che gli permettono una vita agiata. Nel 1983 comincia a lavorare come top producer alla Bear Stearns & Company e quattro anni dopo fonda una propria compagnia, la Gardner Rich & Co. La compagnia è cresciuta fino a diventare una holding, nota con il nome di Christopher Gardner International Holding Company. Gardner attualmente risiede a Chigago e a New York con i suoi due figli Chris Jr e Jacintha. Durch diverse Umstände musste seine Mutter einige Zeit im Gefängnis verbringen, währenddessen er mit seinen Geschwistern in einem Pflegeheim untergebracht wurde. Später trat Gardner in die Navy ein. Nach der Zeit bei der Navy arbeitete er als Verkäufer von medizinischen Geräten (Knochendichtemessgeräte), die er selten verkaufen konnte. Als er in San Francisco einen Mann namens Bob Bridges traf, der aus seinem roten Ferrari ausstieg, fragte er diesen, ob er ihm zwei Fragen stellen dürfe. „Was tun Sie? Und wie tun Sie es?“ Bob Bridges antwortete, dass er ein Börsenmakler sei. Dazu sagte er, dass man nur mit Zahlen und Kunden umgehen können muss. Zudem riet er ihm, ein unbezahltes Praktikum in einer Firma zu machen von dem er gehört hatte, und machte ihn mit anderen Broker-Größen bekannt. Während eines nur geringfügig bezahlten Praktikums, Anfang der 1980er in San Francisco, fiel Gardner in ein finanzielles Loch. Während er tagsüber zur Arbeit ging, übernachtete er mit seinem kleinen Sohn Christopher fast ein Jahr lang in Obdachlosenheimen und manchmal auch in Toiletten der U-Bahn-Stationen. Chris Gardner bekam nach der Broker-Ausbildung als einziger Kursteilnehmer einen Job und wurde später, mit seiner eigenen Firma Gardner Rich, zum Millionär. Mit der Buchfassung seiner Geschichte eroberte er die Spitze der US-Bestsellerliste. Das Buch wurde unter dem Titel Das Streben nach Glück mit Will Smith in der Hauptrolle verfilmt, wobei sich der Film nicht in allen Details streng an die wahren Begebenheiten hält.„Ich war ein von meiner Familie verlassenes Kind – also würde ich mein eigenes Kind nie im Stich lassen“, sagt Gardner heute im Rückblick.
