- The British Rail Class 458 (5-JUP) is a class of electric multiple unit passenger trains built by Alstom at Washwood Heath between 1998 and 2002 for South West Trains. They were the first new fleet of trains to be delivered following the privatisation of British Rail. The order for the original fleet of 30 four-car trains was placed in 1997, and delivery of the first unit followed in October 1998. The fleet entered passenger service between 2000 and 2003 and is maintained at Wimbledon depot. They are part of Alstom's Juniper family of trains, which also includes Classes 334 and 460. Between 2013 and 2016, the class was merged with the mechanically similar Class 460 fleet and extensively rebuilt to form a fleet of 36 five-car units—designated Class 458/5—to provide an increase in capacity on services into London Waterloo. The trains are now used by South Western Railway. In March 2021 South Western Railway announced that 28 Class 458 units would be refurbished and redeployed on long-distance services on the Portsmouth Direct line, as a result of the company deciding to abandon their original plan to use upgraded Class 442 units for this purpose. As part of the refurbishment the fifth car will be removed and the passenger saloons will be modified to better meet passenger expectations for longer journeys. (en)

Elles ont été mises en service en 2000 pour remplacer les rames vieillissantes datant des années 50 et 60 en fin de vie (Slam-door) afin de renouveler le parc de trains de banlieue de la région Sud-ouest de la capitale Londonienne. Les 30 unités de 4 voitures font partie de la famille de Trains Juniper d'Alstom, qui comprend également les Class et . À partir de 2013, la série a subi une profonde transformation en la fusionnant avec une autre série mécaniquement similaire et de la même famille, la . La peinture a été changée pour un nouveau bleu foncé sur l'ensemble des rames, accompagnée d'une reconfiguration en 5 caisses. Depuis cette conversion la série a été renommée Class 458/5 (ou 5JOP) Ces trains ont été utilisés par South West Trains à leurs mise en service et sont maintenant utilisés par South Western Railway depuis le 20 août 2017.
