元来は英語で長靴の開口部にあるつまみ（ないし長靴の周囲に巻き付けて女性の乗馬服の裾をおさえる革紐）を指す語である。なお混同される場合もあるが、日本語でいう「靴紐」（）とは本来別のものである。20世紀になってこの語を用いた「独力でなんとかする」という揶揄的な表現（例：to lift himself up by his own bootstraps）が生まれ、ここから転じてbootstrapを1語で動詞として用いるようになった。なおこの表現についてはミュンヒハウゼン男爵の伝説中にある、自分のbootstrapを引っ張って底なし沼から脱出したというエピソードに由来すると考えられている。しかし18世紀の原本を含む多くの版ではbootstrapではなく髪を引っ張ったと記述されており、その出典は明らかでない。
