- Augustan prose is somewhat ill-defined, as the definition of "Augustan" relies primarily upon changes in taste in poetry. However, the general time represented by Augustan literature saw a rise in prose writing as high literature. The essay, satire, and dialogue (in philosophy and religion) thrived in the age, and the English novel was truly begun as a serious art form. At the outset of the Augustan age, essays were still primarily imitative, novels were few and still dominated by the Romance, and prose was a rarely used format for satire, but, by the end of the period, the English essay was a fully formed periodical feature, novels surpassed drama as entertainment and as an outlet for serious authors, and prose was serving every conceivable function in public discourse. It is the age that most provides the transition from a court-centered and poetic literature to a more democratic, decentralized literary world of prose. (en)
- La prosa augusta es aquella narrativa escrita durante el llamado periodo augusto de Gran Bretaña, y equivale a prosa neoclásica o del siglo XVIII. El término augusto se ha aplicado sobre todo a cambios de gusto en poesía. No obstante, el periodo de la literatura augusta vio el alza de la escritura en prosa. En esta época prosperaron el ensayo, la sátira, y el diálogo (en filosofía y religión), y la novela inglesa empezó de verdad como una forma artística seria. Al principio del periodo augusto, los ensayos eran sobre todo imitaciones, las novelas eran pocas y aún las dominaba el romance, y la prosa era un formato que no se solía usar para la prosa, pero, al acabar el periodo, el ensayo inglés era un género plenamente formado, las novelar superaron al teatro como entretenimiento y forma de expresión de los autores serios, y la prosa sirvió para todas las funciones concebibles del discurso público.
