  • Arnold Wesker (* 24. Mai 1932 in London) ist ein britischer Dramatiker. Wesker entstammt einer jüdischen Arbeiterfamilie. Bevor er seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit begann, arbeitete er in den 1950er Jahren in Gelegenheitsjobs als Schreiner, Erntearbeiter und Koch. Junge Dramatiker wie John Osborne motivierten ihn zu seinen ersten Theaterstücken, die ihm schnell zum Durchbruch verhalfen. Die Küche, Chicken Soup with Barley, Nächstes Jahr in Jerusalem und Tag für Tag waren seine wichtigsten Werke aus dieser Zeit. Viele seiner Stücke sind von der Thematik her gesellschaftskritisch und nehmen die Perspektive der "kleinen Leute" aus der Arbeiterklasse ein. Später kamen Prosawerke, Filmdrehbücher, Gedichte und Hörspiele hinzu. Sein Hauptwerk bleibt jedoch dem Schauspiel verbunden und seine Stücke werden in 17 Sprachen übersetzt. (de)
