- Archibald MacLeish (7. května 1892, – 20. dubna 1982, Boston) byl americký básník a dramatik. Vystudoval literaturu na Yaleově univerzitě a práva na Harvardu. V letech 1923 až 1928 žil ve Francii. V letech 1939-44 pracoval v Knihovně Kongresu. Poté pracoval pro vládu – byl zástupcem ředitele Úřadu pro válečné informace (1942), náměstkem ministra zahraničních věcí (1944-1945), předsedou americké delegace na zakládající konferenci UNESCO (1945). Roku 1949 byl jmenován profesorem rétoriky na Harvardu, kde působil do roku 1962. Třikrát dostal Pulitzerovu cenu, prvně roku 1932 za sbírku Conquistador, roku 1952 za Sebrané verše a roku 1958 za veršované drama J.B. Za stejné drama získal divadelní cenu Tony. Roku 1953 získal National Book Award. V roce 1957 Bollingenskou cenu. Roku 1977 obdržel Prezidentskou medaili svobody. (cs)

- Archibald MacLeish (May 7, 1892 – April 20, 1982) was an American poet and writer, who was associated with the modernist school of poetry. MacLeish studied English at Yale University and law at Harvard University. He enlisted in and saw action during the First World War and lived in Paris in the 1920s. On returning to the United States, he contributed to Henry Luce's magazine Fortune from 1929 to 1938. For five years, MacLeish was the ninth Librarian of Congress, a post he accepted at the urging of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. From 1949 to 1962, he was Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard. He was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes for his work. (en)

Hij wordt geassocieerd met de modernistische school van de poëzie en kreeg drie Pulitzerprijzen voor zijn werk. Uit veel van zijn werk blijkt zijn bezorgdheid over het vrijwaren van de liberale democratie. Zo schreef hij in de jaren dertig over de dreiging van het fascisme. In werken als The Fall of the City (1937), The Air Raid (1938), America Was Promises (1939) en The Irresponsibles (1940) probeerde hij zijn medeburgers te wijzen op het naderend gevaar. In 1933 werd hem de Pulitzerpijs voor poëzie toegekend voor Conquistador, over de verovering en exploitatie van Mexico.
