- An anonymous author known as the Anonimo Gaddiano, Anonimo Magliabechiano, or Anonimo Fiorentino ("the anonymous Florentine") is the author of the Codice Magliabechiano or Magliabechiano, a manuscript with 128 pages of text, probably from the 1530s and 1540s, and now in the Central National Library of Florence (Magliab. XVII, 17). It includes brief biographies and notes on the works of Italian artists, mainly those active in Florence during the Middle Ages. Among several other suggestions, the anonymous author has been suggested to be (1514–1590), a politician of the court of Cosimo I. The author clearly had intimate access to the Medici court. The manuscript dates from about 1536 to the mid 1540s and is considered a useful source for the study of the history of Italian art since it is the most comprehensive biographical source for artists before the 1550 edition of Vasari's Lives, which was being compiled over the same period. While the opening section is devoted to artists from ancient Greece, essentially reprising Pliny the Elder, the most significant part is dedicated to Florentine artists from Cimabue to Michelangelo. The entries for artists concentrate on lists of works, and lack the full biographical ambition of Vasari. (en)

Das 128-seitige Manuskript befindet sich in der Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze unter der Signatur Ms. Magliabechiano XVII, 17, wo es erst 1755 wiederentdeckt wurde. Die durch Detailanalysen bestimmte Datierung – wohl zwischen 1542 und 1548 entstanden oder sukzessiv ergänzt – der Sammlung von Biographien wichtiger Maler, Architekten und Bildhauer aus der Zeit zwischen dem 13. und dem frühen 16. Jahrhundert weist auf die eigentliche historische Bedeutung der Schrift hin, da sie damit kurz vor den 1550 erstmals publizierten Künstlerbiographien des Giorgio Vasari entstanden wäre und Vasari möglicherweise als Quelle gedient hat. In den vergangenen 250 Jahren sind in der Forschung vor allem von Kunsthistorikern und Italianisten zahlreiche Versuche unternommen worden, den Hilfsnamen Anonimo Magliabechiano aufzuschlüsseln und damit das Rätsel um den Entstehungskontext der aus verschiedenen Forschungsperspektiven wichtigen Schrift zu lösen. Darunter wären die Versuche zu nennen, den Verfasser beispielsweise mit , Vincenzo Borghini oder Giovanni Francesco Rustici bzw. Giorgio Vasari selbst zu identifizieren. Wegen des Mangels an stichhaltigen Beweisen – gleiches gilt auch etwa für den jüngsten Versuch, den Anonimo mit dem Florentiner Edelmann zu identifizieren – fand bislang kein Vorschlag in der Forschung breite Akzeptanz. Già appartenuto alla famiglia Gaddi, il testo è poi entrato nella collezione di Antonio Magliabechi, che rappresenta il nucleo centrale della biblioteca fiorentina (da cui i nomi). Mentre la sezione iniziale è dedicata agli artisti delle Grecia antica, riprendendo sostanzialmente il racconto di Plinio il Vecchio, la parte più consistente è dedicata agli artisti fiorentini e alle loro opere. Il manoscritto è databile al 1540 circa ed è una fonte particolarmente preziosa per lo studio della storia dell'arte italiana, rappresentando la trattazione più completa sull'argomento prima dell'edizione del 1550 delle Le Vite di Vasari: lo stesso Vasari vi dovette attingere numerose informazioni. L'ipotesi della dottoranda olandese Bouk Wierda che l'autore possa essere stato Bernardo Vecchietti, influente uomo politico della corte di Cosimo I, non ha convinto gli studiosi. (it)
