Aluka's audience is higher education and research communities worldwide. Founded in 2003, Aluka is an initiative of Ithaka Harbors, Inc., a non-profit organization based in New York City and Princeton, New Jersey. As an incubated entity of Ithaka, Aluka receives support from its parent organization in the areas of finance, human resource management, information technology, software development, research, and strategic guidance. The initial funding was provided by the[http://www.mellon.org/about_foundation/incubatedentities/ithaka/aluka Mellon Foundation], the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation. The first release of Aluka took place in early February 2007. Beginning that month, preview access to Aluka has been provided to all JSTOR subscribers.
