Alcobaça (Portuguese pronunciation: [aɫkuˈβasɐ]) is a Portuguese city and municipality in the Oeste region, in the historical province of Estremadura, and in the Leiria District. The city grew along the valleys of the rivers Alcoa and Baça, from which it derives its name. The municipality population in 2011 was 56,693, in an area of 408.14 square kilometres (157.58 sq mi). The city proper has a population of 15,800 inhabitants.

  • Alcobaça [aɫkuˈbasɐ] ist eine Stadt in Portugal mit 5699 Einwohnern (Stand 30. Juni 2011). Sie liegt in der Unterregion Oeste und gehört zur historischen Provinz Estremadura (administrativ nunmehr Região Centro). Obgleich etwa 10 km entfernt vom Atlantik liegend, durchfließt der Fluss Alcoa die Stadt nur in Höhe von wenigen Metern über dem Meeresspiegel, noch im frühen Mittelalter reichte das Meer als Lagune von Pederneira bis zu den Toren Alcobaças bei Fervenca. Die Stadt hat eine Fläche von 3,1 km². Alcobaça ist Sitz des gleichnamigen Kreises (Município de Alcobaça) mit 56.688 Einwohnern und einer Fläche von 408,1 km², die sich zwischen dem Atlantik und dem bis zu 613 m hohen Gebirge Serra de Candeeiros erstreckt. Dieses Gebiet entspricht zusammen mit dem von ihm umschlossenen Nachbarkreis Nazaré (mit 82,4 km²) sowie Teilen des südlich angrenzenden Kreises Caldas da Rainha der historischen Schenkung des ersten Königs Portugals Afonso Henriques an den Zisterzienser-Abt Bernhard von Clairvaux im Jahre 1153, aus der die Königliche Abtei von Alcobaça mit den Coutos de Alcobaça als ihrem weltlichen Herrschaftsgebiet entstanden sind. Alcobaça erhielt das moderne Stadtrecht (als Cidade) im Jahre 1995. Die Altstadt wird durch das Kloster (Mosteiro de Alcobaça), das 1989 in die Liste der UNESCO als Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen wurde, und ein Kastell geprägt. Sie wurde in den Jahren 2004–2007 vollkommen zu einer verkehrsbeschränkten Zone umgestaltet, wobei auch der Klostervorplatz nach historischen Vorlagen neu angelegt wurde. The city of Alcobaça became notable after the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, decided to build a church to commemorate the Conquest of Santarém from the Moors in 1147. The church later evolved into the Monastery of Alcobaça, one of the most magnificent gothic monuments in the country. In the church are the tombs of Pedro I of Portugal and his murdered mistress Inês de Castro. Over the centuries this monastery played an important role in shaping Portuguese culture. A few kilometers to the north of Alcobaça is the Monastery of Batalha, another gothic building constructed in memory of a different important battle, that of Aljubarrota. To the west of Alcobaça is the fishing village of Nazaré, now a popular resort town. To the south is the city of Caldas da Rainha and the medieval town of Óbidos. Also to the northeast is the town of Porto de Mós with its rebuilt castle. (en)
