- The post-punk revival (also described as New Wave revival, garage rock revival, or new rock revolution) was a development in alternative rock of the late 20th and early 21st centuries in which bands took inspiration from the original sounds and aesthetics of garage rock of the 1960s and post-punk and New Wave of the late 1970s. Bands that broke through to the mainstream from local scenes across the world in the early 2000s included The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives and The Vines, who were followed to commercial success by many existing and new acts. By the end of the decade, most of the bands had broken up, moved on to other projects or were on hiatus, although some bands returned to recording and touring in the 2010s.

Ook wordt er teruggegrepen op Britpop. De stroming wordt vaak in één adem met de vierde britpopgolf genoemd. De postpunkrevivalbands komen echter niet uitsluitend uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Bekende vertegenwoordigers van eerstgenoemd genre zijn onder meer The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs en Editors.

Primeiramente, o termo pós-punk foi cunhado para descrever os grupos que, no final dos anos 70 e começo dos anos 80, começaram a experimentar, a partir do punk, e com melhorias na estrutura musical, temas líricos, e ao mesmo tempo mantendo a posição iconoclasta do punk. Fazem parte desta época: The Cure, Joy Division, Public Image Ltd. , Killing Joke, The Psychedelic Furs, Gang of Four, Talking Heads, XTC, Echo and The Bunnymen, The Raincoats, Wire, e Magazine. A partir do ano 2000, o termo pós-punk começou a aparecer na mídia novamente, com uma série de críticos trazendo o rótulo à tona, para descrever as novas bandas que compartilham a estética musical das originais. The Strokes, The Rapture, The Killers, Liars, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Futureheads, The Cribs e Bloc Party são os primeiros sucessos comerciais desse projeto de reviver o interesse da mídia no movimento. Essa segunda onda do pós-punk incorpora elementos de dance music e gêneros que fazem parte do movimento dance punk, da mesma forma que o movimento original foi influenciado pelos estilos Krautrock, Dub, e Disco dos anos 70. O crítico Simon Reynolds aponta que essas bandas geralmente são influenciadas de uma tendência mais angular, como Wire e Gang of Four.
