- Wincing the Night Away ist das vierte Musikalbum der US-amerikanischen Indie-Band The Shins. Es erschien 2007 bei Sub Pop, erhielt gute Kritiken und verkaufte sich vor allem in den Vereinigten Staaten sehr gut. Alle auf dem Album enthaltenen Songs wurden von James Mercer, Sänger und Gitarrist der Shins, geschrieben. Der Titel des Albums ist eine Anspielung auf den Song Twistin' The Night Away von Sam Cooke. Wincing the Night Away gilt als experimenteller als die Vorgängeralben der Gruppe. In dem Song Sealegs lassen sich Hip-Hop-artige Beats finden. Die Gitarre wird teilweise durch ein undeutlicheres Keyboard ersetzt. Mercers Gesang wird stellenweise wiederholt oder erhält ein Echo. Das Album ist außerdem um etwa zehn Minuten länger als die Vorgängeralben der Band. Anita Robinson von Viva Voce, die die Band auch bei Live-Auftritten unterstützten, ist in dem Lied Phantom Limb zu hören. (de)

I en intervju med Pitchforkmedia i december 2005 sa bandets frontman James Mercer att de hade cirka femton låtidéer när de började spela in, men alla kommer inte vara med på albumet. Några låtar skulle bli bland annat b-sidor. Några möjliga låttitlar, innan den fullständiga listan var fastställd, var "Pah Pah Pah", "The Phantom Limb", "Salt From the Orchard" och "She Wants In". Mercer sa även att bandet planerade att skicka in sitt färdiginspelade album till skivbolaget den 1 april 2006. Två låtar som tidigare var framförda på konserter, "Circus" och "Won One Too Many Fights", förväntades även komma med på albumet, något som inte hände. (sv)
