- A data set (or dataset) is a collection of data, usually presented in tabular form. Each column represents a particular variable. Each row corresponds to a given member of the data set in question. It lists values for each of the variables, such as height and weight of an object or values of random numbers. Each value is known as a datum. The data set may comprise data for one or more members, corresponding to the number of rows. Historically, the term originated in the mainframe field, where it had a well-defined meaning, very close to contemporary computer file. This topic is not covered here. In the simplest case, there is only one variable, and then the data set consists of a single column of values, often represented as a list. In spite of the name, such a univariate data set is not a set in the usual mathematical sense, since a given value may occur multiple times. Normally the order does not matter, and then the collection of values may be considered to be a multiset rather than an (ordered) list. The values may be numbers, such as real numbers or integers, for example representing a person's height in centimeters, but may also be nominal data (i.e. , not consisting of numerical values), for example representing a person's ethnicity. More generally, values may be of any of the kinds described as a level of measurement. For each variable, the values will normally all be of the same kind. However, there may also be "missing values", which need to be indicated in some way. In statistics data sets usually come from actual observations obtained by sampling a statistical population, and each row corresponds to the observations on one element of that population. Data sets may further be generated by algorithms for the purpose of testing certain kinds of software. Some modern statistical analysis software such as PSPP still present their data in the classical data set fashion.
- Ein Dataset bezeichnet eine größere, zusammenhängende Datenmenge, nicht zu verwechseln mit einem Datensatz einer Datenbanktabelle. Im Detail hat der Begriff aber je nach Kontext unterschiedliche Bedeutungen:
- Un dataset (o data set), così come dice anche la traduzione, è un insieme di dati. Un dataset si presenta spesso in forma tabellare, ogni colonna rappresenta una variabile (come ad esempio Nome, Cognome, Colore Occhi, ...). Ogni riga corrisponde all'informazione oggetto di studio del dataset. In particolar modo è una lista di valori corrispondenti alle variabili, ad esempio: Mario,Rossi, verde, ... La dimensione del dataset può essere data dal numero delle righe presenti. Di fatto si identifica un dataset come un tabella contente dati. Il termine viene molto usato in informatica e in statistica assumendo concetti più particolareggiati
- Zbiór danych – kolekcja danych statystycznych zwykle ujętych w formie stabelaryzowanej. Najczęściej kolumny odpowiadają obserwowanym cechom statystycznym a każdy wiersz opisuje jedną obserwację z próby. Wartości komórek macierzy opisują realizacje danych zmiennych w kolejnych obserwacjach. Szczególnym przypadkiem jest też macierz kontyngencji w której wiersze odpowiadają etykietom jednej zmiennej nominalnej, kolumny etykietom drugiej zmiennej, a wartości macierzy odpowiadają liczności w próbie obserwacji o danych wartościach tych dwóch zmiennych. Historycznie, termin powstał w świecie komputerów IBM mainframe, gdzie miał dobrze zdefiniowane znaczenie, bliskie współczesnym plikom. Dzisiaj w świecie komputerów najbliższym pojęciem jest tabela w bazie danych. Kolumny reprezentujące zmienne na skali interwałowej lub przedziałowej zawierają liczby rzeczywiste. Kolumny opisujące zmienne na skali nominalnej i porządkowej mogą również być liczbami, ale także np. etykietami tekstowymi. Ponadto w może w dowolnej komórce wystąpić brak danych, który musi być w jakiś sposób możliwy do odróżnienia. Niekiedy rezerwuje się dla niego specjalną wartość liczbową i znakową. W statystyce zbiory danych zwykle stanowią wyniki obserwacji pewnej próby statystycznej. W statystyce teoretycznej niekiedy tworzy się zbiory danych sztucznie (np. w celu sprawdzenia jak dana metoda statystyczna reaguje na różne rozkłady w populacji). Istnieją też zaawansowane metody obliczania istotności statystycznej, które wymagają usuwania lub powielania obserwacji w zbiorze. Chociaż termin "zbiór danych" sugeruje związek ze zbiorami w sensie matematycznej teorii mnogości, jednak analogia ta nie sięga daleko. Elementy zbioru danych mogą się powtarzać, w przeciwieństwie do elementów matematycznych zbiorów.
