De eendekker was een veelzijdig toestel, waarmee complete bemanningen van RAF-bommenwerpers konden opgeleid worden. Het was geschikt voor de training van piloten (inclusief blindvliegen en nachtvliegen), boordschutters (in de eerste versie Oxford I), radio-operatoren, navigatoren en bommenrichters. Voor deze laatsten was onderaan in de neus een Perspexpaneel voorzien. Het toestel kon zestien oefenbommen van 5 kg vervoeren. Achter de piloten was een cabine met radio- of navigatieapparatuur. De Oxford kon ook als verbindingsvliegtuig gebruikt worden of als vliegende ambulance. De eerste vlucht van een Oxford vond plaats op 19 juni 1937. De RAF nam het toestel in november 1937 in dienst. Er zijn 8.586 Oxfords gebouwd. Tijdens de oorlog werden ze intensief gebruikt door de RAF en andere geallieerde luchtmachten. Na de oorlog werden ze nog jaren gebruikt als verbindingsvliegtuig. The Oxford was developed by Airspeed during the 1930s in response to a requirement for a capable trainer aircraft that conformed with Specification T.23/36, which had been issued by the British Air Ministry. Its basic design is derived from the company's earlier AS.6 Envoy, a commercial passenger aircraft. Performing its maiden flight on 19 June 1937, it was quickly put into production as part of a rapid expansion of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in anticipation of a large-scale conflict. As a consequence of the outbreak of war, many thousands of Oxfords were ordered by Britain and its allies, including Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, Poland, and the United States. Following the end of the conflict, the Oxford continued to achieve export sales for some time, equipping the newly formed air forces of Egypt, India, Israel, and Yugoslavia. Sviluppato dall'Airspeed Envoy destinato all'impiego civile, entrambi i velivoli vennero utilizzati, all'epoca della seconda guerra mondiale, per l'istruzione al volo nelle scuole di pilotaggio del Regno Unito e del Commonwealth. In particolare, l'aereo prese questo nome in memoria del pioniere pilota Amy Johnson, il quale perse la vita a Oxford, dopo essere precipitato con il suo aereo alla foce del Tamigi nel gennaio del 1941. Esteve em serviço de 1937 até 1954 e atingiu a incrível marca de 8.751 exemplares construídos. Das diversas versões produzidas destacam-se a versão Mk.I, destinada a escolas de metralhadores e de bombardeadores, a versão Mk.II, para escolas de navegadores e radioperadores e a versão Mk.III que foi usada como ambulância e transporte leve.
