- In United States colleges, top-tier basketball is governed by collegiate athletic bodies including National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Each of these various organizations is subdivided into one to three divisions, based on the number and level of scholarships that may be provided to the athletes. Each organization has different conferences to divide up the teams into groups. Teams are selected into these conferences depending on the location of the schools. These conferences are put in due to the regional play of the teams and to have a structural schedule for each team to play for the upcoming year. During conference play the teams are ranked not only through the entire NCAA, but the conference as well in which they have tournament play leading into the NCAA tournament. (en)

Als Collegesport hat Basketball bei den Herren nach American Football, Baseball, Leichtathletik und Fußball und bei den Damen nach Leichtathletik, Softball, Fußball und Volleyball die meisten Sporttreibenden, dabei allerdings die mit Abstand meisten Teams und damit die größte Verbreitung: Lediglich 29 von 1119 Hochschulen (keine davon in Division I) boten 2016 keinen Herren-Basketball an und lediglich zwölf von 1119 Hochschulen keinen Damen-Basketball. Die bekannteste College-Basketball-Liga ist die National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Auch wenn die NCAA keine professionelle Liga ist, ist sie doch sehr professionell organisiert und die nationale Meisterschaft des NCAA-Division-I-Basketball-Championship-Turniers neben weiteren Basketball-Turnieren verschafft der NCAA immerhin 95 % ihrer Einnahmen. Da nur die besten Talente aus den High Schools rekrutiert werden, dient sie für diese als Sprungbrett zum professionellen Basketball. College-Basketball unterscheidet sich nur minimal von den Profiligen. So beträgt die Zeit, die man für einen Angriff in der NCAA hat, seit den 1980er Jahren 30 Sekunden im Vergleich zu den im professionellen Basketball üblichen 24 Sekunden. Auch sind die Dreier- und Freiwurflinie näher am Korb und das Spielfeld ist unwesentlich kleiner. Die Spiele in der NCAA sind auch nicht, wie in Profiligen üblich, in Viertel unterteilt, sondern in zwei Halbzeiten zu je 20 Minuten. (de)

Cette compétition comprend trois divisions : Division I, Division II et Division III. Toutefois, d'autres organisations participent à l'élaboration du basket-ball universitaire comme la National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), la (USCAA), la National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) et la (NCCAA). Chacune de ces organisations est subdivisée d'une à trois divisions en fonction du nombre et du niveau de bourses qui peuvent être accordées aux athlètes. Scottie Pippen est un exemple de joueur sorti de NAIA et ayant pourtant réussi une formidable carrière en NBA. Chaque organisation a des conférences différentes pour diviser les équipes en groupes. Les équipes sont sélectionnées pour ces conférences en fonction de l’emplacement des écoles.
