In biology, homeostasis (British also homoeostasis) (/hɒmɪə(ʊ)ˈsteɪsɪs/) is the state of steady internal, physical, and chemical conditions maintained by living systems. This is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits (homeostatic range). Other variables include the pH of extracellular fluid, the concentrations of sodium, potassium and calcium ions, as well as that of the blood sugar level, and these need to be regulated despite changes in the environment, diet, or level of activity. Each of these variables is controlled by one or more regulators or homeostatic mechanisms, which together maintain life. U živých organismů je to schopnost udržovat stabilní vnitřní prostředí, které je nezbytnou podmínkou jejich fungování a existence, i když se vnější podmínky mění. Příkladem organické homeostáze je udržování acidobazické rovnováhy nebo tělesné teploty u homoiotermních organizmů. Kyberneticky se homeostáze vysvětluje jako záporná zpětná vazba, která na základě chybového signálu redukuje odchylky od normativní, správné hodnoty. Zařízení nebo systém, který takto funguje, se nazývá homeostat. Homeostaza (gr. homoíos – podobny, równy; stásis – stanie, trwanie, postawa) – zdolność utrzymywania względnie stałych parametrów wewnętrznych w systemie (zamkniętym lub otwartym). Pojęcie to zwykle odnosi się do samoregulacji procesów biologicznych. Pojęcie homeostazy wprowadził Walter Cannon w 1939 roku na podstawie założeń Claude Bernarda z 1857 r. dotyczących stabilności środowiska wewnętrznego. Homeostaza jest podstawowym pojęciem w fizjologii. Homeostaza jest podstawowym pojęciem w fizjologii. This is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits (homeostatic range). Initialement défini par Claude Bernard le terme homéostasie provient du grec ὅμοιος, hómoios, « similaire », et στάσις (ἡ), stásis, « stabilité, action de se tenir debout ». La notion s'est ensuite révélée utile à l’étude de toutes sortes d'organismes et systèmes en biologie, sociologie, politique, automatismes, et plus généralement dans les sciences des systèmes. L’idée d’homéostasie fut aussi abondamment utilisée par W. Ross Ashby, l'un des pères de la cybernétique, qui en a donné une illustration purement physique par la construction d'un « homéostat » composé d'éléments mobiles qui retrouvent leur position de stabilité après avoir été perturbés. Dans les neurosciences, l'homéostasie joue un rôle clé dans une théorie spéculative de la conscience et du sentiment d'unité de soi.
