- Als Westbahn wird die 1853 eröffnete württembergische Eisenbahnstrecke von Bietigheim-Bissingen über Bretten nach Bruchsal bezeichnet. Sie stellte die erste Schienenverbindung zwischen den Staaten Württemberg und Baden her. Früher ein wichtiges Bindeglied im nationalen wie internationalen Fernverkehr, hat sie diese Funktion seit der Inbetriebnahme der Schnellfahrstrecke Mannheim–Stuttgart weitgehend abgegeben und dient heute vorrangig dem Regional- und Güterverkehr zwischen Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim und Heidelberg. Die Strecke ist Teil des Kernnetzes der Transeuropäischen Verkehrsnetze. Die Bahnstrecke Stuttgart–Karlsruhe, die aus einem Teil dieser Strecke und der Bahnstrecke Karlsruhe–Mühlacker besteht, wird seit Ende 2010 von der Deutschen Bahn unter der Bezeichnung „Residenzbahn“ geführt. It was the first railway link between the states of Württemberg and Baden in Germany and one of the oldest lines in Germany. Formerly an important link line in national and international long-distance traffic, it has largely lost that role since the opening of the Mannheim–Stuttgart high-speed railway and primarily handles regional and goods traffic between the cities of Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Heidelberg. Dawniej była ważną magistralą kolejową o znaczeniu międzynarodowym. Status ten straciła po wybudowaniu linii kolei dużych prędkości Mannheim – Stuttgart i obecnie obsługuje przede wszystkim ruch regionalny i towarowy pomiędzy miastami Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim i Heidelberg.
