L'épreuve féminine s'est tenue de 1969 à 1995, sur terre battue à partir de 1985. L'édition du 23 septembre 1970 marque les débuts du tout nouveau circuit Virginia Slims, exclusivement féminin et autonome, prémices du WTA Tour. Avec six titres (dont quatre consécutifs de 1976 à 1979), Martina Navrátilová détient le record du nombre de victoires en simple. L'épreuve masculine s'est déroulée en 1985 et 1986 ; elle était jouée sur moquette. D'autres tournois masculins se sont également joués à Houston, l'U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship et le tournoi de River Oaks. Plus de 20 ans après la dernière édition, une épreuve combinée masculine et féminine refait surface à Houston. Elle est inscrite aux calendriers WTA 125 et ATP Challenger. It was held in Houston, Texas in the United States and played on indoor carpet courts from 1970 to 1984 and on outdoor clay courts from 1985 to 1995. The event has the distinction of being the first-ever tournament on the professional women's circuit, which would eventually become the WTA Tour. In 1971, the event served as the series Championships of the inaugural Virginia Slims Tour. Martina Navratilova was the most successful player at the tournament, winning the singles and doubles competitions six times each, partnering Dutchwomen Betty Stöve and Manon Bollegraf and Americans Janet Newberry, Pam Shriver, Elise Burgin and Kathy Jordan once each for her doubles successes. - Het WTA-toernooi van Houston is een tennistoernooi voor vrouwen dat om te beginnen in de twintigste eeuw van 1969 tot en met 1995 plaatsvond in de Amerikaanse stad Houston. De officiële naam van het toernooi was over het algemeen Virginia Slims of Houston. De WTA organiseerde het toernooi, dat vanaf 1991 in de categorie "Tier II" viel en sinds 1985 werd gespeeld op gravel. Er werd door 28 deelneemsters per jaar gestreden om de titel in het enkelspel, en door 16 paren om de dubbelspeltitel.
