Fue protagonizada por Fredric March, Elissa Landi, Claudette Colbert, Charles Laughton, Ian Keith y Arthur Hohl. Tanto el libro como la película tienen un gran parecido con la novela Quo vadis, todas ambientadas en la Antigua Roma bajo el reinado del emperador Nerón. La dirección artística estuvo a cargo de Mitchell Leisen. Karl Struss fue nominado a un Premio Óscar por Mejor fotografía. Based on the original 1895 play by English playwright Wilson Barrett, the screenplay was written by Waldemar Young and Sidney Buchman. It stars Fredric March, Elissa Landi, Claudette Colbert, and Charles Laughton, with Ian Keith and Arthur Hohl. Both play and film have a strong resemblance to the 1895–96 novel Quo Vadis and, like the novel, take place in ancient Rome during the reign of Nero. The art direction and costume design were by Mitchell Leisen, who also acted as assistant director. Karl Struss was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. It is the third and last in DeMille's biblical trilogy, following The Ten Commandments (1923) and The King of Kings (1927). (en)

Épico feito dentro do prazo (oito semanas) e sem ultrapassar o orçamento ($650,000), o filme assinalou tanto a volta de DeMille à Paramount Pictures quanto seu reencontro com o sucesso, o primeiro na era do cinema sonoro. No entanto, nem todos os excessos típicos do diretor foram abandonados: uma das sequências mais célebres, a do banho da imperatriz Popeia, foi feita com leite de verdade e, como demorou muito a ficar pronta, dois dias depois o set exalava um cheiro insuportável. Produzido em data anterior ao Motion Picture Production Code, que instituiu a censura na produção cinematográfica em 1934, o filme é pródigo em erotismo e sadismo mesclados com religião, uma marca de DeMille.
