It tells the story of Ruth Ramsey, a divorced sexual education teacher who lives in suburban New Jersey and comes into conflict with the town's conservative population. According to Perrotta, it is "all about sex education and the culture wars." He was inspired to write the novel after reading of the influence of evangelical voters on the 2004 presidential election, stating, "I did feel somewhat inadequate as a novelist, just like I'd missed something huge happening in this country. È stato pubblicato negli Stati Uniti nel 2007 a cura di St. Martin's Press, e nello stesso anno in Italia da Edizioni e/o. Perrotta afferma che l'idea di scrivere il romanzo ha avuto origine dall'esito delle elezioni presidenziali statunitensi del 2004, nelle quali sarebbero stati determinanti i voti provenienti dalla fetta evangelica della popolazione. Perrotta dichiarò al riguardo: «Mi sentii in qualche modo inadeguato come romanziere, come se mi fossi perso qualcosa di importante in questo paese.
