Der Legende zufolge stammt der Wallfahrtsort aus dem 5. Jahrhundert, als Christus dem heiligen Patrick eine Höhle (auch als Schacht oder Quelle bezeichnet) zeigte, welche ein Eingang zur Hölle sei.Seine Bedeutung im Mittelalter ergibt sich aus Erwähnungen in Texten seit 1185 und Darstellung auf Landkarten aus ganz Europa seit dem 15.
