The Santiago Municipal Literature Award (Spanish: Premio Municipal de Literatura de Santiago) is one of the oldest and most important literary awards in Chile Created in 1934 by the municipality of Santiago, its first edition awarded the categories of novel, poetry and theater (later to be renamed as dramaturgy). Two categories were added soon after – essay, in 1941, and short story, in 1954 – and four other more recently, in 2013 – children's and young adult literature, referential (memoirs, chronicles, diaries, letters, biographies, and also compilations and anthologies), journalistic research and editing. In 2014 it was decided to start awarding children's and young adult literature separately, making it a total of ten categories.

El premio literario más antiguo de Chile​ consiste en la entrega de una suma de dinero, que en 2016 fue de 2 000 000 de pesos chilenos, para cada género y del diploma correspondiente.​ Pueden presentarse al concurso las obras publicadas en primera edición el año anterior a la convocatoria (en dramaturgia, pueden hacerlo asimismo las obras estrenadas el año anterior al concurso); en cada género, su jurado selecciona tres finalistas de entre los cuales elige posteriormente al ganador.​ Este antiguo galardón ha sufrido algunas interrupciones durante su historia. No se concedió en los primeros tres años después del golpe militar encabezado por el general Augusto Pinochet, que derrocó en septiembre de 1973 al gobierno socialista de Salvador Allende. Fue restablecido por el Reglamento N.º 4 del 22 de diciembre de 1976 bajo la administración del alcalde Patricio Mekis.​ A mediados de la década siguiente, el entonces alcalde de Santiago, Carlos Bombal revocó en 1985 el premio a Jaime Miranda y su Regreso sin causa​ y ordenó suspender el acto de entrega de los galardones.​ El premio permaneció interrumpido hasta 1988; al año siguiente, siendo alcalde Máximo Honorato, el Reglamento N.º 7 del 25 de enero lo restableció; la decisión del jurado, que en aquella ocasión concedió un premio compartido y cuatro menciones honrosas, fue publicada el 26 de junio.​ La epidemia de covid19 motivó la suspensión del premio en 2020,​ pero la convocación del año siguiente pudieron competir no solo los libros publicados en primera edición en 2020, sino también los que salieron en 2019.​​ (es)
