- Der Begriff salutary neglect (englisch, dt. „heilsame Vernachlässigung“) bezeichnet die inoffizielle Politik der britischen Regierung gegenüber ihren Kolonien in Nordamerika in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts, die vor allem durch Nichteinmischung geprägt war und den Kolonien faktisch eine weitgehende Autonomie ermöglichte. Der Begriff wurde erst im Nachhinein von Edmund Burke geprägt; in seiner Rede vor dem House of Commons vom 22. März 1775 zum Verhältnis zu den Kolonien heißt es: „That I know that the colonies in general owe little or nothing to any care of ours, and that they are not squeezed into this happy form by the constraints of watchful and suspicious government, but that, through a wise and salutary neglect, a generous nature has been suffered to take her own way to perfection; when I reflect upon these effects, when I see how profitable they have been to us, I feel all the pride of power sink, and all presumption in the wisdom of human contrivances melt, and die away within me.“ (de)
- In American history, salutary neglect was the policy of the British Crown of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws, especially trade laws, as long as British colonies remained loyal to the government of, and contributed to the economic growth of their parent country, England and then Great Britain after the Acts of Union 1707, in the 18th century. Up to the end of the 17th century, mercantile ideas were gaining force in England and giving general shape to trade policy through a series of Navigation Acts. After the collapse of the centralized Dominion of New England in 1689 to 1763, salutary neglect was employed. After 1763, Britain began to try to enforce stricter rules and more direct management, leading eventually to the American Revolutionary War. (en)
- A negligência salutar foi uma política de "abandono" – pouca interferência – adotada pelo rei da Inglaterra quando as Treze Colônias queriam a independência. Já que essas colônias não ofereciam riquezas à Inglaterra, para atender a seus interesses mercantilistas, como ouro e prata, a Coroa Inglesa deu autonomia administrativa aos colonos. Eles passaram a "autogovernar-se" (contudo, não se tornaram independentes) e administrar os próprios impostos (Self Government). Essas preocupações mercantilistas eram idênticas às dos outros europeus na época, como o metalismo e a balança comercial favorável. Esse descaso fez com que ingleses que estavam desempregados tivessem oportunidade de crescimento do outro lado do Atlântico. Essas pessoas eram, em maioria, protestantes calvinistas que visavam a liberdade religiosa e camponeses que perderam o direito de trabalhar por causa dos cercamentos. A Política de Negligência Salutar dava certa liberdade aos colonos, tanto economicamente quanto politicamente. Assim, constituíram-se as primeiras pequenas propriedades familiares.
