- Le poney de l'île de Sable est un poney autochtone de l'île du même nom en Nouvelle écosse au Canada, qui y vit à l'état sauvage et semi-sauvage au moins depuis le XVIIe siècle. C'est un poney avec un phénotype et des origines de cheval, souvent de robe sombre. Les premiers poneys ont été lâchés à la fin du XVIIe siècle avant de devenir sauvages. Plus tard, d'autres poneys furent ajoutés au troupeau existant pour améliorer le cheptel de reproduction. Ils ont été chassés pour un usage privé ainsi que pour être utilisés comme source de nourriture, ce qui provoqua quasiment leur extinction. En 1960, le Canada protège cette race. À partir des années 1980, des études non invasives sur le troupeau sauvage sont réalisées. En 2007, une analyse génétique est menée sur le troupeau, concluant que ce dernier est unique en termes d'éléments génétiques et peut intéresser les biologistes. En 2008, la race est déclarée officiellement représentative de l'Île de Sable. En 2011, l'île est officiellement déclarée parc naturel. Le troupeau est protégé et libre de toutes interventions humaine. Les chevaux vivent uniquement sur l’île de Sable, et au (en) sur la partie continentale de la Nouvelle-Écosse, grâce à des chevaux descendant du troupeau introduit en 1950. (fr)
- The Sable Island horse is a small feral horse found on Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. It has a horse phenotype and horse ancestors, and usually dark in colour. The first horses were released on the island in the late 1700s, and soon became feral. Additional horses were later transported to improve the herd's breeding stock. They were rounded up for private use and sale for slaughter, which by the 1950s had placed them in danger of extinction. During the 2018 study, the estimated population was 500 horses, up from the roughly 300 recorded in the 1970s. In 1960, the Canadian government protected the horses by law in their feral state. From the 1980s on, long-term, noninvasive herd studies have been performed, and in 2007 a genetic analysis was conducted that concluded the herd was genetically unique enough to interest conservationists. In 2008, the horses were declared the official horse of Nova Scotia, and in 2011, the island was declared the Sable Island National Park Reserve. The herd is unmanaged, and legally protected from interference by humans. The horses live only at Sable Island and, until 2019, at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park on the mainland of Nova Scotia, with the latter herd descended from horses removed from Sable Island in the 1950s.
