- Le SS Winfield Scott est un bateau à roues à aubes américain lancé le 27 octobre 1850. Le soir du 1er décembre 1853, alors qu'il fait route entre San Francisco et le Panama, il s'échoue contre l'île Anacapa, dans les Channel Islands de Californie. Aujourd'hui protégée au sein du parc national des Channel Islands et du sanctuaire marin national des Channel Islands, son épave est inscrite au Registre national des lieux historiques depuis le 12 septembre 1988. - SS Winfield Scott was a sidewheel steamer that transported passengers and cargo between San Francisco, California and Panama in the early 1850s, during the California Gold Rush. After entering a heavy fog off the coast of Southern California on the evening of December 1, 1853, the ship crashed into Middle Anacapa Island. All 450 passengers and crew survived, but the ship was lost. Winfield Scott has been the object of numerous salvage operations since the crash, and currently rests underwater as part of the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. The Winfield Scott wreck site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (en)
