- SS Haverford was an American transatlantic liner commissioned in 1901 for the American Line on the route from Southampton to New York, then quickly on the route from Liverpool to Boston and Philadelphia. During her early years, this ship, mainly designed to transport migrants and goods, was the victim of several incidents. Her company was integrated into the International Mercantile Marine Co. (IMM) in 1902 and she was used by other companies within the trust, the Dominion Line and the Red Star Line. The start of World War I did not hinder her civilian service. It was not until January 1915 that she was requisitioned as a troop transport. During the conflict, she was attacked on several occasions by German submarines, one of them succeeding in torpedoing her on June 12, 1917. Although eight people died, the ship was beached and then repaired. After the war, she resumed, from 1919, her service to Philadelphia. In 1921, another company within the IMM, White Star Line, took over the Philadelphia route previously operated by American Line, as well as the Haverford. Contrary to the usual practice of the company, the ship was not renamed, and continued to serve Philadelphia. From 1922, she returned to her original company for several crossings from Hamburg, then joined the White Star again. In 1924, worn out, the ship was sold to Italian wreckers, and scrapped the following year. (en)

Durant ses premières années, ce navire principalement conçu pour transporter migrants et marchandises est victime de plusieurs incidents. Sa compagnie ayant été intégrée à l'International Mercantile Marine Co. (IMM) en 1902, il lui arrive également, durant cette période, d'être utilisé par d'autres compagnies de la société, la Dominion Line et la Red Star Line. Le début de la Première Guerre mondiale n'entrave pas son service civil. Ce n'est qu'en janvier 1915 qu'il est utilisé comme transport de troupes. Durant le conflit, il est attaqué à plusieurs reprises par des sous-marins allemands, l'un d'entre eux parvenant à le torpiller le 12 juin 1917. Bien que huit personnes périssent, le navire est échoué, puis remis en état. Il reprend ensuite, à partir de 1919, son service à destination de Philadelphie. En 1921, une autre compagnie de l'IMM, la White Star Line, reprend la ligne de Philadelphie exploitée jusque-là par l'American Line, ainsi que le Haverford. Contrairement à l'habitude de la compagnie, le navire n'est pas renommé, et continue à desservir Philadelphie. Dès 1922, il retrouve sa compagnie d'origine pour plusieurs traversées au départ de Hambourg, puis rejoint à nouveau la White Star.
