- Pontifikál, celým názvem římský pontifikál (latinsky Pontificale Romanum), je liturgická kniha římského ritu pro obřady vedené biskupem kromě mší, tedy například pro biřmování, svěcení kněží či kostelů a žehnání, jakož i pro konání kanonických vizitací a podobně. V případech stanovených kanonickým právem může pontifikál používat také jiný ordinář, i když není biskupem (například nebo opat). První pontifikály vznikly koncem 9. století. Pod názvem Pontificale Romanum vydal pontifikál poprvé papež Klement VIII. v roce 1596. Obdobou pontifikálu ve východních církvích je archieratikon. Až do roku 1965 byla chybně označována jako Pontificale Romanum i jedna z nejstarších liturgických knih dochovaných v českých zemích Kroměřížský sakramentář. (cs)

- Le Pontifical romain (latin : Pontificale Romanum) est un livre liturgique de l'Église catholique romaine contenant les rites suivis par les évêques. Le Pontifical est un rite épiscopal contenant des rubriques et des formules (chants, lectures, prières, et même des indications pour les gestes) sur les sacrements et les sacramentaux qui peuvent être célébrés par un évêque, notamment la consécration du Saint chrême, ou encore les sacramentaux de l'ordination sacerdotale. Cependant, il n'inclut pas les rites relatifs à la messe ou aux offices qui peuvent être trouvés respectivement dans le Missel romain et dans la Liturgie des Heures. Parce que l'utilisation de l'adjectif pontifical renvoie généralement au Pape, les gens pensent parfois que son utilisation est réservée au chef de l'Église catholique. Or précisément, ce livre est à destination de l'ensemble des évêques dont le pape fait partie, en tant qu'évêque de la ville de Rome. L'utilisation de ce livre n'est pas l'exclusivité des évêques mais, en accord avec le droit canonique actuel de l'Église catholique, il peut aussi être utilisé dans certaines circonstances par d'autres personnes comme les abbés. Le Pontifical a pour principales sources des textes et rubriques qui existaient dans les anciens sacramentaux et l'Ordines Romani et qui furent agrégés dans un unique ouvrage par commodité de réalisation des offices par les évêques. Les Pontificaux les plus anciens datent de la fin du IXe siècle. Depuis le milieu du Xe siècle, une compilation assez particulière, connue des historiens comme le Pontifical romano-germanique, deviendra une référence et sera recopiée de nombreuses fois. Néanmoins, ces Pontificaux manuscrits donnèrent naissance à de nombreuses variantes et un pontifical peut assez facilement être interprété de différentes manières comme un Liber Pontificalis, Liber Sacramentorum, Liber Officialis, Ordinarium Episcopale ou encore un bénédictionnaire. Durant le pontificat de Clément VIII, une version standardisée fut publiée, contenant l'ensemble du rite catholique romain, sous le nom de Pontificale Romanum. Elle fut réimprimée par les autorités avec des nombreuses variantes jusqu'en 1962 où son contenu fut grandement réformé après le Concile Vatican II. Cet ouvrage ne doit pas être confondu avec la collection des annales papales intitulée Liber Pontificalis, compilée pour la première fois vraisemblablement vers le Ve ou VIe siècle. (fr)
- The Roman Pontifical, in Latin Pontificale Romanum, is the pontifical as used by the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church. It is the liturgical book that contains the rites and ceremonies usually performed by bishops of the Roman Rite. The pontifical is the compendium of rites for the enactment of certain sacraments and sacramentals that may be celebrated by a bishop, including especially the consecration of holy chrism, and the sacraments of confirmation and holy orders. However, it does not include the rites for the Mass or the Divine Office, which can be found in the Roman Missal and Liturgy of the Hours respectively. Because of the use of the adjective pontifical in other contexts to refer to the Pope, it is sometimes mistakenly thought that the Pontificale Romanum is a book reserved to the Pope. It could be argued that it is the book of those entitled to the use, in certain contexts, of the pontificalia, i.e. episcopal insignia. These are not always limited just to bishops, but–according to current 1983 Code of Canon Law of the Latin Church–it can in certain circumstances be used by others including abbots and rulers of dioceses or quasi-dioceses who have not been ordained bishops. - Het Pontificale Romanum is in de Katholieke Kerk het boek waarin die liturgische diensten worden beschreven die aan de bisschoppen zijn voorbehouden of gewoonlijk slechts door hen worden verricht (wijdingen, toediening van het vormsel en zegeningen van personen en zaken). De oorsprong van dit boek gaat terug op de sacramentaria (gebedenboeken) en de ordines (orden van dienst), die om praktische redenen werden samengevoegd. Het oudste Pontificale stamt uit Mainz (950) en is een weergave van de Romeins-Frankische liturgie; het is uit vele handschriften gereconstrueerd. Dit boek is in heel Europa verspreid en ten slotte in Rome overgenomen. Daar werd het meermalen bewerkt en herzien, op het eind van de 13e eeuw door , bisschop van Mende.
