Fue establecido por los españoles en 1770, siendo su primer comandante Pedro Fages, cedido el 20 de abril de 1822 al Primer Imperio Mexicano y tomado por los EE. Le Presidio disposait d'un panorama sur toute la baie de San Diego et sur l'océan, ce qui permettait aux Espagnols de pouvoir repérer très tôt les éventuels intrus. Ce Presidio a été la première installation permanente européenne sur la Côte Pacifique et servait de base d'opérations pour la colonisation espagnole de la Californie, réussie à travers le développement des missions, presidios et pueblos. Le Presidio était aussi la base de l'exploration de l'intérieur des terres de la Californie et resta le siège du pouvoir militaire de la région durant la période de domination mexicaine. L’indépendance du Mexique en 1821 porte un premier coup aux presidios. Il fut abandonné en 1835, après la sécularisation des missions par le gouvernement mexicain. (fr)

It was established on May 14, 1769, by Gaspar de Portolá, leader of the first European land exploration of Alta California—at that time an unexplored northwestern frontier area of New Spain. The presidio was the first permanent European settlement on the Pacific Coast of the present-day United States. As the first of the presidios and Spanish missions in California, it was the base of operations for the Spanish colonization of California. The associated Mission San Diego de Alcalá later moved a few miles away. Essentially abandoned by 1835, the site of the original Presidio lies on a hill within present-day Presidio Park, although no historic structures remain above ground. The San Diego Presidio was registered as a California Historical Landmark in 1932, then declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960. (en)

Het presidio werd op 14 mei 1769 opgericht door commandant van het Spaanse Rijk. Het was de eerste permanente Europese nederzetting aan de Stille Oceaankust in de huidige Verenigde Staten en het diende als de basis voor de Spaanse kolonisatie van Alta California. De bijhorende rooms-katholieke missie, die in hetzelfde jaar door Junípero Serra gesticht werd, verhuisde in 1774 een aantal kilometer verderop om de invloed van de militairen op de missie te verkleinen. Het presidio werd in 1835 verlaten. Het presidio, waar geen restanten van overblijven, bevindt zich op een heuvel in het huidige in San Diego.
