- Un podologue est un praticien en pédicurie et en podologie. Le podologue ou pédicure-podologue, en France, traite les affections épidermiques et unguéales du pied ainsi que ses troubles statiques et dynamiques. Le podologue cumule ainsi deux activités complémentaires :
* en pédicurie, une activité de soins. Ces soins visent à prévenir, à déceler et à traiter les pathologies congénitales ou acquises entraînant des affections épidermiques et unguéales ;

- A podiatrist (/poʊˈdaɪətrɪst/ poh-DY-ə-trist) is a medical professional devoted to the treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. The term originated in North America but has now become the accepted term in the English-speaking world for all practitioners of podiatric medicine. The word chiropodist was previously used in the United States, but it is now regarded as antiquated. In the United States, podiatrists are educated and licensed as Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). The preparatory education of most podiatric physicians — similar to the paths of traditional physicians (MD or DO) — includes four years of undergraduate work, followed by four years in an accredited podiatric medical school, followed by a three- or four-year hospital-based residency. Optional one- to two-year fellowship in foot and ankle reconstruction, surgical limb salvage, sports medicine, plastic surgery, pediatric foot and ankle surgery, and wound care is also available. Podiatrists are licensed in all fifty states, although each state has its own licensing requirements. The scope of practice may vary from state to state and residency training. In many countries, the term podiatrist refers to allied health professionals who specialize in the treatment of the lower extremity, particularly the foot. Podiatrists in these countries are specialists in the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of foot pathology. - Il podologo (o podoiatra) è un professionista sanitario, specialista nella branca della medicina denominata podologia. Questa branca della medicina si occupa dei trattamenti medici e chirurgici della caviglia e delle estremità inferiori della gamba. Per cui prevenzione, diagnosi e terapia farmacologica e/o chirurgica. In Italia si tratta di una figura istituita dal Ministero della sanità in base al regolamento di cui al D.M. 666/1994 e norme successive. Nelle sue competenze rientrano in particolare i trattamenti delle affezioni epidermiche ed ungueali di tipo meccanico o di altra eziologia. Le più diffuse sono le ipercheratosi. Inoltre le onicopatie e lesioni conseguenti: onicocriptosi, onicopatie dismorfiche, onicopatie micotiche e distrofiche. I trattamenti sono finalizzati al mantenimento funzionale dei piedi e vengono attuati metodi incruenti, ortesici e idromassoterapici. La professione del Podologo è fondamentale nella prevenzione di complicanze che possono facilmente insorgere nei soggetti colpiti da queste affezioni e che hanno patologie metaboliche (diabete), cardiovascolari (vasculopatie periferiche) ortopediche (deviazioni delle articolazioni metatarso-falangee e alterazioni del carico plantare) e reumatologiche (osteo-articolari e atrofia del pannicolo adiposo plantare).Il podologo valuta la morfologia del piede e la sua funzionalità (in statica e dinamica) con tecniche strumentali per esami di podoscopia e baropodometria. Inoltre per il trattamento del piede doloroso, come previsto dal D.M. 666/1994, si avvale di dispositivi medici non invasivi. Per il trattamento di lesioni del tessuto epidermico, causate da virus come le verruche, attua trattamenti di asportazione incruenta, comunque riferibile al D.M. 666/1994.Infine la figura del podologo trova campo di applicazione nel trattamento, mediante idonei plantari, di alterazioni della postura, con eventuale master universitario, in quanto il piede è un importante recettore del sistema tonico posturale (STP). Un assetto sbagliato del piede spesso derivante da ipertono-ipotono di catene muscolari crea uno squilibrio del STP che può causare dolori cronici recidivanti. L'applicazione di Ortesi per gli stimoli propriocettivi che modulano il segnale degli organi recettoriali del muscolo (apparato tendineo del Golgi e fusi neuromuscolari) possono riequilibrare lo squilibrio ed eliminare le tensioni. Il podologo assiste all'educazione dei pazienti con patologie a rischio e collabora con gli altri specialisti per la gestione delle persone affette da patologie che richiedono un approccio multi-disciplinare. De naam is afgeleid van het Griekse woord pous (genitief podos (ποδός)) wat voet betekent. Letterlijk vertaald betekent podotherapie dus voettherapie. Podotherapeut is in Nederland een wettelijk beschermde titel, die alleen mag worden gevoerd door iemand die een hbo-bacheloropleiding podotherapie heeft afgerond. De beroepsgroep podotherapeut werd als erkend paramedisch beroep geintroduceerd in 1982 en is enkel bekend in Nederland. Buiten Nederland spreekt men over podologen. (nl)

En fotterapeut undersöker fötterna och behandlar bland annat; kartnaglar, nageltrång, liktornar, förhårdnader, hälsprickor, felställningar m.m. Fotterapeuten har även en viktig roll när det gäller information om egenvård, och tillhandahåller oftast allt från avlastningsmaterial och inlägg till fotcremer på sina kliniker.
