Er erschien zuerst in den USA bei Dodd, Mead and Company im Februar 1952 und im Vereinigten Königreich im Collins Crime Club am 3. März desselben Jahres. The Detective Book Club gab ebenfalls 1952 eine Ausgabe unter dem abweichenden Titel Blood Will Tell heraus. Die deutsche Erstausgabe erschien 1956 im Scherz Verlag (Bern) in der bis heute verwendeten Übersetzung von George S. Martin. Es ermitteln Hercule Poirot in seinem 24. und Ariadne Oliver in ihrem zweiten Roman. Die Veröffentlichung dieses Romans stellt den Beginn einer neuen Phase in Christies Beziehung zu ihrem Helden dar. - Mrs McGinty's Dead is a work of detective fiction by British writer Agatha Christie, first published in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company in February 1952 and in the UK by the Collins Crime Club on 3 March the same year. The US edition retailed at $2.50 and the UK edition nine shillings and sixpence (9/6). The Detective Book Club issued an edition, also in 1952, as Blood Will Tell. The novel features the characters Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver. The story is a "village mystery", a subgenre of whodunit which Christie usually reserved for Miss Marple. The novel is notable for its wit and comic detail, something that had been little in evidence in the Poirot novels of the 1930s and 1940s. Poirot's misery in the run-down guesthouse, and Mrs Oliver's observations on the life of a detective novelist, provide considerable entertainment in the early part of the novel. The publication of Mrs McGinty's Dead may be considered as marking the start of Poirot's final phase, in which Ariadne Oliver plays a large part. Although she had appeared in Cards on the Table in 1936, Mrs Oliver's most significant appearances in Christie's work begin here. She appears in five of the last nine Christie novels featuring Poirot, and appears on her own without Poirot at all in The Pale Horse (1961). (en)

Le roman met en scène une enquête d'Hercule Poirot. Le détective reçoit la visite d'un vieil ami, le commissaire Spence, qui a mené une enquête sur le meurtre d'une femme de ménage, Mme McGinty. Un suspect, James Bentley, a été interpellé et, compte tenu des preuves apparemment accablantes à son égard, il a été reconnu coupable par la cour d'assises et condamné à mort. Toutefois le policier n’est pas satisfait du verdict et une petite voix intérieure lui suggère que James Bentley pourrait être innocent. Il demande à Poirot d'enquêter afin d'éviter une éventuelle erreur judiciaire. Après que Poirot eut commencé son enquête, il apparaît que Mme Upward, une autre vieille dame et employeur de Mme McGinty, croit reconnaître un visage sur une vieille photographie. Peu de temps après avoir confié son sentiment à Poirot, elle est assassinée à son tour. Poirot va donc tenter de découvrir le ou la coupable des deux meurtres. Le personnage secondaire d'Ariadne Oliver apparaît dans le roman et y apporte une touche humoristique. Comme à son habitude elle se ridiculise et notamment se trompe sur l’identité du coupable. (fr)
