Esta organización —que usó el nombre del héroe homónimo de la independencia, considerado el primer guerrillero en la historia del país— fue inicialmente el aparato militar del Partido Comunista de Chile, en la denominada «Política de Rebelión Popular de Masas», donde el Partido Comunista y el FPMR adoptaron todas las formas de lucha contra la dictadura militar, incluyendo la vía armada, donde el FPMR actuó principalmente en forma de «guerrilla urbana». El FPMR/Autónomo (post 1987) fue considerado como una organización terrorista por el Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos de América hasta 1999, año en que fue eliminado de su lista debido al cese de sus actividades armadas. Tornou-se independente do PCCh, renunciou à luta armada, e integrou-se ao do sistema parlamentar chileno durante a Transição Chilena para a Democracia, participando da coalizão de esquerda Juntos Podemos Más. O grupo, que tem o nome da resistência ao regime colonial espanhol, foi criado para formar uma organização militar em escala nacional, com o objetivo de liderar a resistência popular e promover o colapso da violenta ditadura de Augusto Pinochet. Suas atividades variaram da propaganda armada ao assassinato dos inimigos do povo. Em setembro de 1986, 15 membros do grupo desfecharam um ataque com metralhadoras e foguetes contra o ditador Augusto Pinochet, matando cinco dos seus seguranças. Em 1991, a Frente Patriótica Manuel Rodríguez resolveu continuar os ataques contra alvos econômicos, nomeadamente empresas norte-americanas.
