Ce mystique et auteur spirituel est notamment connu pour avoir réalisé la Philocalie des Pères neptiques avec Nicodème l'Hagiorite, publiée à Venise en 1782. Macario es más célebre por su colaboración con Nicodemo de la Montaña Sagrada en la recopilación y compilación del texto ascético de la Filocalia. Macario fue obispo de Corinto entre 1765 y 1769 y, a partir de entonces, obispo sin sede.
