- Als Leichtbier wird ein Bier bezeichnet, das aufgrund eines besonderen Herstellungsprozesses weniger Alkohol als herkömmliches Bier enthält. Hierdurch ist auch der physiologische Brennwert von Leichtbier geringer, als der des Vollbieres. Das historische Dünnbier hat ähnliche Eigenschaften wie Leichtbier, wurde aber typischerweise anders und als minderwertiges Produkt hergestellt.Im Vergleich zu Vollbier ist der Alkoholgehalt um etwa ein Drittel reduziert. Der Begriff des Leichtbieres wird nicht einheitlich verwendet und ist nur in manchen Ländern über die Gesetzgebung definiert.
* In der Schweiz kann ein Bier mit einem Stammwürzegehalt von unter 10 % als Leichtbier bezeichnet werden.

- Light beer is a beer, usually a pale lager, that is reduced in alcohol content or in calories compared to regular beers. The first use of the term in marketing was in the 1940s when the Coors Brewing Company sold Coors Light, for a short period before World War II, relaunching it more successfully in 1978 as a 4.2% abv pale lager. In 1967, the Rheingold Brewery marketed a 4.2% pale lager, Gablinger's Diet Beer, developed by American biochemist Joseph Owades, as a beer for people dieting. It was not successful, and the recipe was given to Peter Hand Brewing Company of Chicago, who sold it as Meister Brau Lite. Peter Hand later rebranded itself as Meister Brau Brewing (to highlight their flagship product in an attempt to go national), but after encountering financial problems in 1972, they sold the Meister Brau line of beers to Miller Brewing Company. The latter relaunched the beer as Miller Lite. Light beers may be chosen by beer drinkers who wish to manage their alcohol consumption or their calorie intake; however, they are sometimes criticised for being less flavourful than full-strength beers, or for tasting or actually being watered down. - La bière light (leichtbier en allemand - dry ou dia en anglais - lehké en tchèque) est une bière légère (ou allégée), c'est-à-dire au taux de sucre et/ou au volume d'alcool spécialement abaissés afin de s'adapter à certains profils de consommateurs (ouvriers, paysans, obèses, diabétiques, notamment). Comme dans d'autres domaines (cigarette, café, soda, etc.) il s'agit surtout d'une appellation commerciale sans définition normative internationale. Comme pour bien d'autres produits, le terme anglophone Light occupe une large part du marché et aucune appellation francophone (ou germanophone) n'a pu rivaliser ou s'imposer. Le terme Lite rencontré parfois n'est qu'une marque déposée, privée donc. Bien que certaines de ces bières soient parfois assez pauvres en alcool (2 à 3 % en volume), elles ne sont pas des bières sans alcool (dont le taux maximum ne doit pas dépasser 1,2 % d'alcool en vol.). Les bières faiblement alcoolisées sont administrativement classées en France parmi les bières de table et en Allemagne parmi les Schankbiere (2,5 à 4,0 % d'alcool en vol.) et les Einfachbiere ; la loi du Reinheitsgebot s'y applique tout autant dans les pays où elle est en vigueur.
