- A letterer is a member of a team of comic book creators responsible for drawing the comic book's text. The letterer's use of typefaces, calligraphy, letter size, and layout all contribute to the impact of the comic. The letterer crafts the comic's "display lettering": the story title lettering and other special captions and credits that usually appear on a story's first page. The letterer also writes the letters in the word balloons and draws in sound effects. Many letterers also design logos for the comic book company's various titles. (en)

- Il letterista è un artigiano specializzato in incisioni di iscrizioni su lastre metalliche o di marmo, ovvero un artista specializzato nell'esecuzione delle parti testuali nelle lavorazioni grafiche. Il termine è inoltre diffuso nel glossario fumettistico. Il lemma è derivato da "lettera" nel XVII secolo.Nell'ambito del mestiere artigianale, "letterista" era un tempo sinonimo sia di lapidario, sia di epistolografo e per estensione si intendeva quale definizione di chi idea e realizza scritte e decorazioni su cartelloni ed insegne pubblicitarie. Ha poi sostituito inoltre il termine calligrafo, sia nel linguaggio discorsivo che nel settore della grafica. Nell'ambito di quest'ultimo, quale mansione specializzata al pari di quella dell'inchiostratore, il letterista è nel XXI secolo in particolare colui che esegue il lettering, nella creazione delle nuvolette e delle didascalie in uso nei fumetti. Os primeiros letristas surgiram nos anos 1940 nos Estados Unidos, quando o volume de trabalho na produção de quadrinhos fez com que surgissem diversas especializações, como arte-finalistas e coloristas, além dos roteiristas e desenhistas. Os letristas também são responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento de para adaptações de quadrinhos para outras línguas, especialmente no caso de países com acentuação gráfica, nem sempre existente na fonte original.
