Národní ozbrojené síly se skládají z Pozemních sil, Námořních sil, Vzdušných sil, Národní gardy a dalších menších velitelství a speciálních jednotek. La "Zemessardze", aŭ nacia gardistaro, estas aŭtonoma, kvazaŭmilitista organizo da 11 000 homoj, kiu cetere plenumas la taskojn de nacia, ceremonia gardistaro. Ekde la 1-a de januaro 2007, ĉiuj latvaj soldatoj rekrutiĝas per kontraktoj. La ĝenerala elspezo pri defendo de Latvio emas pligrandiĝi, kaj en 2006 reprezentis 1.65% de la latva buĝeto. Latvo aktive kooperas kun Estonio kaj Litovio en la kuna infanteria bataliono BALTBAT, kaj en la militŝipa eskadro BALTRON. La lando plie oficiale kuniĝis NATO la 29-an de marto 2004. (eo)
