- Die letzten und die ersten Menschen (Originaltitel: Last and First Men) ist ein Science-Fiction-Roman des englischen Autors Olaf Stapledon. In dem erstmals 1930 erschienenen Roman, der auch heute noch als einer der Klassiker der Science-Fiction-Literatur gilt, beschreibt Stapledon die Geschichte der Menschheit in einem Zeitraum von 2 Milliarden Jahren. Zusammen mit den Büchern Last Men in London und Der Sternenmacher (Originaltitel: Star Maker) bildet der Roman die Future History/Last Men Reihe. Das Buch wurde neben dem Deutschen auch ins Italienische (Infinito), ins Niederländische (Laatste en Eerste Mensen), ins Französische (Les derniers et les premiers) und ins Ungarische (Az utolsó és az első emberek) übersetzt. - Last and First Men: A Story of the Near and Far Future is a "future history" science fiction novel written in 1930 by the British author Olaf Stapledon. A work of unprecedented scale in the genre, it describes the history of humanity from the present onwards across two billion years and eighteen distinct human species, of which our own is the first. The book employs a narrative conceit that, under subtle inspiration, the novelist has unknowingly been dictated a channelled text from the last human species. Stapledon's conception of history follows a repetitive cycle with many varied civilisations rising from and descending back into savagery over millions of years, as the later civilisations rise to far greater heights than the first. The book anticipates the science of genetic engineering, and is an early example of the fictional supermind; a consciousness composed of many telepathically linked individuals. In 1932, Stapledon followed Last and First Men with the far less acclaimed Last Men in London. Another Stapledon novel, Star Maker (1937), could also be considered a sequel to Last and First Men (mentioning briefly man's evolution on Neptune), but is even more ambitious in scope, being a history of the entire universe. Il relate l'aventure de l'humanité durant les deux prochains milliards d'années. Au cours de cette période, pas moins de dix-huit différentes espèces humaines croîtront et disparaîtront tour à tour. Ce roman d'une ampleur exceptionnelle, ne serait-ce que par l'étendue de la période historique qu'il couvre et l'ambition du propos, a pourtant connu une adaptation cinématographique particulièrement originale dans son concept et dans sa forme, par le compositeur et réalisateur islandais Jóhann Jóhannsson. Cette originalité, pour une improbable adaptation au cinéma, était d'ailleurs imposée par l'immensité du sujet de ce roman, dont Arthur C. Clarke a dit (propos repris dans la réédition anglaise du livre en 1999) qu'il était « l’un des romans les plus extraordinaires, les plus imaginatifs et les plus ambitieux du siècle: rien de moins que l’histoire de l’évolution de l’humanité au cours des 2 milliards d’années à venir. […] Il n’y a aucun livre avant ou depuis qui ait eu un tel impact sur mon imagination. Ce livre a littéralement changé ma vie quand je l’ai lu à 14 ans. Comme je l’ai reconnu souvent, une grande partie de mon œuvre ultérieure a été façonnée par les visions de Stapledon. Même si son histoire du monde de l’après-1930 a été rapidement dépassée par les événements (ou peut-être se sont-ils produits dans un autre univers parallèle?), en tous cas, ses scénarios du futur restent impressionnants [à la fois terrifiants, imposants et hautement inspirants] ». Dzieło bezprecedensowe w skali świata, autor opisuje historię ludzkości w okresie dwóch miliardów lat, w którym to pierwszym są Pierwsi Ludzie (czyli nasz własny gatunek), a także siedemnaście innych gatunków człowieka, które na zmianę rozwijają się i degenerują. W polskim przekładzie fragment powieści ukazał się w antologii Droga do science fiction, a całość w 2020 roku nakładem Wydawnictwa Stalker Books. Kontrowersyjna cześć książki ukazuje Piątych Ludzi w przyszłości, którzy uciekają z umierającej Ziemi i osiedlają się na Wenus, tam w procesie eksterminacji mieszkańców (inteligentnego gatunku morskiego) przejmują władzę nad planetą. Przez niektórych jest ona interpretowana jako akceptacja ludobójstwa jako uzasadniony i niezbędny akt do przetrwania ludzkości. Jednak wielu stronników Stapledona twierdzi, że jego intencje były inne. Miał on zamiar pokazać, że mimo postępu społecznego i technicznego w przyszłości człowiek nadal będzie zdolny do brutalności.
