- جاكوب ريس (بالإنجليزية: Jacob August Riis) هو مصلح اجتماعي أمريكي من أصل دنماركي (3 مايو 1849م - 26 مايو 1914م)، اشتهر بتكريس مهارته الصحفية في التصوير وكتابة المقالات في إصلاح الأوضاع الاجتماعية للفئات البائسة التي كانت تعيش في الفقر المدقع في نيويورك القرن التاسع عشر. في عام 1870م هاجر ريس إلى الولايات المتحدة وحطت به الرحال في مدينة نيويورك التي كانت حينها أسرع مدينة في العالم نموا في السكان بسبب الهجرات البشرية التي تصب فيها من كل مكان. كانت مانهاتن إحدى ازحم الأمكنة في العالم حيث بلغت كثافتها في ثمانينات القرن التاسع عشر أن يقطن 334 ألف إنسان في ميل مربع واحد هو الجانب الشرقي السفلي من مانهاتن. كان الوضع مأساويا للغاية، حيث ينحشر السكان في تلك المساكن الضيقة والقذرة المليئة بالأمراض، كان كل 10 إلى 15 شخص يسكنون في غرفة واحدة. وكان طبقة الأثرياء والميسورين لا تعلم عنهم شيئا ولاتهتم بهم أصلا. التحق ريس بصحيفة نيويورك تريبيون الذي عمل فيها كمراسل في الشرطة، حيث مكنه عمله من الذهاب مع قوات الشرطة في حملات المداهمة التي تشنها في الأحياء الفقيرة في الجانب الشرقي السفلي من مانهاتن حيث كانت تداهم أوكار العصابات وبيوت الدعارة وصالات القمار. وهناك صدم ريس مما رأى من بؤس وفقر وجهل وأدرك مدى الظلم الفادح التي تعانيه تلك الفئات المطحونة التي لا يدري عنها المجتمع ولا يأبه بها. Va contribuir significativament a la causa de la reforma urbana a Amèrica a principis del segle XX. És conegut per utilitzar el seu talent fotogràfic i periodístic per ajudar els pobres a la ciutat de Nova York. Aquests van ser objecte de la majoria dels seus escrits i fotografies. Va aprovar la implementació de "habitatges model" a Nova York amb l'ajuda de l'humanitari Lawrence Veiller. A més, com un dels defensors més famosos de la fotografia casual, és considerat un dels pares de la fotografia a causa de la seva adopció del flash a la fotografia. Es célebre por emplear su talento como fotógrafo y periodista para ayudar a los inmigrantes empobrecidos del Lower East Side neoyorquino, quienes fueron los principales sujetos de sus obras. Contribuyó a la erradicación de las casas de vecindad insalubres de los barrios marginales del sur de Manhattan en las que la población malvivía hacinada, apostando en su lugar por la construcción de viviendas modelo, de acuerdo al plan de Boston. Prestó especial atención al problema de la infancia en los suburbios: denunció el empleo de mano de obra infantil en los talleres de explotación laboral o "sweatshops", la baja escolarización de los niños, y la falta de zonas verdes y de patios de recreo donde pudiesen crecer de forma saludable. Fue además uno de los primeros fotógrafos en utilizar el recientemente descubierto flash de magnesio como fuente auxiliar de iluminación para sacar a la luz el modo en que vivía y trabajaba la "otra mitad" de la ciudad, y por ello es considerado uno de los pioneros de la fotografía documental norteamericana. He endorsed the implementation of "model tenements" in New York with the help of humanitarian Lawrence Veiller. Additionally, as one of the most famous proponents of the newly practicable casual photography, he is considered one of the fathers of photography due to his very early adoption of flash. While living in New York, Riis experienced poverty and became a police reporter writing about the quality of life in the slums.
