It contains superficial muscles, including the lower part of the temporalis muscle, the lateral pterygoid muscle, and the medial pterygoid muscle. It also contains important blood vessels such as the middle meningeal artery, the pterygoid plexus, and the retromandibular vein, and nerves such as the mandibular nerve (CN V3) and its branches. Elle communique avec la fosse ptérygo-palatine (qui se situe médialement par rapport à la fosse infratemporale) via la fissure ptérygo-maxillaire. Elle loge le corps adipeux de la face. Ses limites sont définies par :

* caudalement, l'insertion du muscle ptérygoïdien médial sur la face médiale de l'angle de la mandibule ;
* médialement, le processus ptérygoïde, du côté rostral, et le muscle ptérygoïdien médial ;
