- The Information Awareness Office (IAO) was established by the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in January 2002 to bring together several DARPA projects focused on applying surveillance and information technology to track and monitor terrorists and other asymmetric threats to U.S. national security by achieving "Total Information Awareness" (TIA). It was achieved by creating enormous computer databases to gather and store the personal information of everyone in the United States, including personal e-mails, social networks, credit card records, phone calls, medical records, and numerous other sources, without any requirement for a search warrant. The information was then analyzed for suspicious activities, connections between individuals, and "threats". The program also included funding for biometric surveillance technologies that could identify and track individuals using surveillance cameras and other methods. Following public criticism that the technology's development and deployment could lead to a mass surveillance system, the IAO was defunded by Congress in 2003. However, several IAO projects continued to be funded under different names, as revealed by Edward Snowden during the course of the 2013 mass surveillance disclosures. (en)

La mission de l'IAO était « Imaginer, développer, appliquer, intégrer, démontrer et évoluer des techniques informatiques, des composantes et des prototypes à l'intérieur de systèmes d'information en boucle fermée qui contrecarreront les menaces asymétriques en obtenant la connaissance complète de l'information. » À la suite de critiques du public, affirmant que l'application de ces techniques pourrait éventuellement mener à un système de surveillance de masse, le Congrès des États-Unis a coupé les fonds à l'IAO en 2003, mais plusieurs projets maintenus par l'IAO ont continué grâce à d'autres fonds. - L'Information Awareness Office (IAO, Ufficio Informatore) è stato istituito dal Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA, Agenzia di Ricerca Avanzata in Progetti per la Difesa), l'agenzia per la ricerca e lo sviluppo del Dipartimento della Difesa degli Stati Uniti, nel gennaio 2002 per accorpare diversi progetti del DARPA concentrati nell'applicazione della tecnologia informatizzata per contrastare minacce alla sicurezza nazionale. La missione dell'IAO era rivolta a "immagine, sviluppo, applicazione, integrazione, dimostrazione e tecnologie, componenti e prototipi per il passaggio di informazioni, cicli-ridondanti, sistemi di informazioni in grado di contrastare minacce asimmetriche attraverso l'ottenimento della conoscenza della totalità dell'informazione". Syftet var att samla olika pågående projekt beställda av DARPA, med inriktning på internet-monitorering.Avlyssningen var avsedd att skydda USA mot terroristhot. Efter 11 september-attackerna kom idén till IAO från President Ronald Reagans tidigare säkerhetsrådgivare Admiral John Poindexter samt Brian Hicks som var VD för ett dotterbolag till SAIC.Poindexter och Hicks hade tidigare jobbat tillsammans i andra projekt kring underrättelseverktyg. Även DARPA's chef Anthony Tether, tillsatt efter 11 september-attackerna, kom från en chefsbefattning på företaget SAIC. Efter en artikel i New York Times 2003 väcktes en massiv kritik mot IAO, för att det var integritetskränkande mot alla amerikanska medborgare. Kongressen avslog därefter budgeten för IAO på 200 miljoner dollar, men flera olika delprojekt inom IAO har ändå levt vidare under andra namn. DARPA:s verksamhet har under Bush-administrationen skyddats genom införandet av en högre sekretess. (sv)
